We were set on moving there before we ended up moving to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia instead. Lots to do, great restaurants, great shopping, beautiful beaches. Lots of people compare it to LA, so that might help give you a picture of the city culture (and the massive highways that run through every part of the city). You should definitely check it out! And while you're at it, give KL a look as well - lots of the same great features as Dubai, except the amazing amazing beaches are all about an hour flight away on georgeous little islands.
