More greenery in the garden

Posted in In The Garden on Jan 11, 2007

I’ve noticed a trend in the way I garden. When I first began my lovely garden 5 years ago it was all about the flowers.

I wanted lots of roses, and of course I did achieve that goal with over 60 roses in my collection now. I choose flowering plants, a variety that would bloom from mid March until well into late October or early November.

Now, while I still appreciate my wide variety of flowering plants I’ve noticed in the last couple of years the lack of greenery. I put in more hosta’s over the last two years and I’m carefully working at selecting more greenery as it will balance the garden out and compliment the flowers.

I usually try to get plants that are hardy to a zone or two lower than my USD Zone 5b or Canadian Zone 6b just to be sure they make it through our winters. I know I shouldn’t have to go so low, but I really hate losing plants and this is one safe guard against losing plants.

Does anyone have any suggestions for nice greenery that works well in their Zone 5 or lower garden? I’m starting to plan my late winter purchases.
