Driving lesson on an airport runway? D U M B

Most people take new drivers to deserted areas like empty parking lots to learn how to drive for the first time, but not this one Philippine man.

For some reason he thought it might be a good idea to teach his girlfriend to drive a van on an Airport runway … sure, nice long stretch of pavement … but what about the planes!

As it happens just when the woman took to the runway a Philippine plane with 80 passengers on board was coming in for a landing! The quick thinking pilot managed to avert a crash.

The Cebu Pacific plane briefly touched down at Legazpi airport in the central Philippines Saturday but took off again as the van being driven by the couple crossed the runway.

Apparently the man is the son of a local aviation official – perhaps that’s why he thought teaching his girlfriend to drive on a runway was a good idea?

Luckily the pilot was on the ball and averted what could have been a tragic accident.

Sure, it’s a nice stretch of land, but it’s an Airport! These areas are for planes. Man, it amazes me the illogical things that people do. It does not make any sense at all. It is a shame that the pilot had to add someone else’s stupid decision to the other concerns that he probably has to be aware of at any given time on the job.

People do the dumbest things, I tell ya!

Wow! That’s really crazy — I hadn’t heard that. Good thing the pilot was thinking on his feet.

Just goes to show how good training and common sense can save lives, we really don’t need any more plane accident right about now!

Lucky that the pilot was thinking fast!
That’s all we need, more blinking plane disasters!

Seems a good idea to learn to drive on an airport provided it’s a closed airport! Lots of open space and nothing much to crash into! There’s one in every village!

I regularly take pupils to a local unused air field for driving tuition, the open space provides a lot of security and confidence for novice and first time drivers. Before allowing my pupils to drive on the open road I like to first assess their driving abilities upon an airfield.
