This weeks theme is Metal

Mooses? I don’t think that there’s a plural for moose …

We took this photo of a metal moose while attending an Art fair here in Toronto. This moose is made out of a recycled oil tank!

This second moose was found in front of a Chicago building.

Squirrels accidently shut off electricity in two cities

Hundreds of Midwestern Power customers and two squirrels were very unlucky one day last fall.

Apparently a squirrel came into contact with an overhead transformer and knocked out service to 177 customers. Power was restored in just under an hour, but naturally the squirrel lost it’s life. The remains were found by repair crews.

Just 40 miles away in Ironwood, Mich, another squirrel got into a substation and caused a temporary power outage that affected 1400 customers.

The power company is now thinking about what kind of steps it can take to keep curious animals away from the lines as they, along with weather, are one of the leading causes of power outages.

“We kind of liken it to anyone who’s had a bird feeder and tried to keep the squirrels out,” said the power company spokesperson. “They find a way.”

Good luck!

It’s not illegal to block a sidewalk in New York

Unfortunately for people who want to keep moving while on crowded sidewalks it’s been ruled that even if you and your friends are blocking peoples paths through bustling Times Square it’s not a crime.

Matthew Jones had been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in June of 2004, but the New York Court of Appeals decided on Tuesday to overturn his conviction. At the time police has said that people had to walk around him and that he wouldn’t moved when asked and he flailed his arms.

Jones pleaded guilty in 2004 after spending a night in jail, but he later appealed.

To be convicted of disorderly conduct in New York, a person must be acting “with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or recklessly creating a risk thereof” and obstructing vehicular or pedestrian traffic, according to the unanimous opinion.

The court found that Jones’ behavior - standing in the middle of the sidewalk at 2:01 a.m. with friends - did not meet the definition.

“Otherwise, any person who happens to stop on a sidewalk - whether to greet another, to seek directions or simply to regain one’s bearings - would be subject to prosecution under this statute,” the opinion said.

Maybe this isn’t illegal, but it sure is rude when I encounter it on the streets of Toronto. Move to the side people!

Bomb report turns into a pumpkin

In September, the FBI checked out a report of an atomic bomb in Tacoma and found it had turned into a pumpkin. The Port of Tacoma called the FBI after the deputy director received a phone message from a port commission candidate, Bill Casper. He said he knew how to make an atomic bomb that could elude security devices.

An FBI spokeswoman in Seattle, Robbie Burroughs, says four agents went to Casper’s office 5 days after the phone call to question him. He says he spent an hour with the agents showing them a pumpkin and another squash similar in size to pieces of the Hiroshima bomb. Burroughs says the agents left satisfied it wasn’t dangerous.

Casper’s top issue as a candidate is preventing atomic material from being smuggled into the port, and he says he expected his research would trigger scrutiny.
