Sheriffs deputies mistook an exploding cigarette lighter for gunfire and dove to the ground, called in reinforcements and shut down a neighborhood for hours!
“We have a lot of unusual things happen in our business, and we expected the unexpected. It’s better to be safe than sorry,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Craton said.
The lighter in question belonged to one of the two people that had been stopped around noon for loitering and drinking alcohol in Zappopan Park. While the two were being questioned the lighter was placed on the hood of a police car. When the lighter exploded shrapnel went everywhere and the two deputies and two suspects went down to the ground when they thought they were being fired upon.
Reinforcements were called in and the neighborhood was locked down for two hours. Deputies clutching shotguns and pistols leaned on squad cars and a command post went up at a nearby Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot.
Paramedics and dozens of deputies were on hand as helicopters buzzed the area. Two hours later, a special enforcement officer discovered the culprit – the Bic lighter.

Custom Officials discovered approximately 10.5 ounces of ecstasy tablets hidden inside a Mr. Potato Head toy that was sent to Australia from Ireland.
When the Australian Custom officials opened the parcel they were greeted with the smiling face of this popular children’s toy. However when they removed the back panel of the toy they found the ecstasy tablets contained in a plastic bag.
Officials turned the matter over to federal police. No arrests have been made at this time as the case is still under investigation. The maximum penalty for importing drugs to Australia is life imprisonment.
“Whilst this is one of the more unusual concealments that we have seen in recent times, people need to be aware that Customs officers are alert to unusual and often outlandish methods of concealment,” Customs Director Post Karen Williams said.

I found another story with kind hearted crooks.
In Uruguay, three thieves robbing a sporting-goods store spent half an hour waiting on customers before making their getaway.
Unusual? Well they’d just locked up one employee in a back room and forced another to hand over money when some customers came into the shop in Montevideo. The robbers sold them goods for about 30 minutes before taking off.
