Taken in July, driving from Toronto to Ottawa Ontario

As you get closer to Ottawa, driving through the valley you start to see more and more rock cuts along the road. Many of the rocks are calcite – lovely red, rugged.

We have calcite too in Aotearoa but, it’s found predominantly along the highlands or coastal regins of the west coast. I have been looking for limestone to make a feature in our barbeque area but would not overlook a good slab of Calcite or perhaps the squerer Rhodochrosite.
I have always found it amazing that these rock formations seem to crop up in the most unlikely places when in fact it’s that we humans have constructed utilities etc over or around them
