It’s quite normal for Peony buds to be covered in ants. I’ve heard that the ants help protect the buds from invasive insects so it’s a symbiotic relationship.
Most of my peonies are blooming now but I haven’t had a chance to take any photos. I’d better do it soon as Peonies don’t last all that long around here. Luckily it’s been kind of cool (well luckily for the garden, not for us) so they might last a little longer than normal this year.

I like this shot – are you using a tripod to steady the lens? It would be cool to get in tight on those ants or whatever they are…
