Wild Flower Seed Head

You know Autumn is closing in when you see lovely flower seed heads like this.

I came across this lovely seedhead when I was out walking my dog with my husband almost two weeks ago on our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend here in Toronto.

We were at a local park that we often go to for long hikes with our Labrador Retriever. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was bright and low in the sky. I saw the seed head with the sun shining behind it and knew I had to take a photo. I hope that you appreciate it’s simple beauty as much as I do.

Gorgeous! Daniel Deronda Clematis seed head

I think Clematis flowers are lovely, but when the flower fades away and a seed head develops? On some types of clematis, the seed head is as pretty or even more beautiful than the flower it replaced!

Now the Daniel Deronda Clematis is lovely. It has deep purple, thick, velvet petals. It’s outstanding to view …. but then this lovely, almost feathery seed head develops and it’s almost equal in beauty.

The shell of a flower

At the beginning of October I took a photo of a flower that was just starting to die down and become a seed head. It was one of the most amazing looking flowers that I think I’ve ever seen … it almost looked like it was composed of tiny spiders or bugs. Click the link above to see what I’m talking about.

Well … I took a photo of the flower again near the beginning of November when the flower was long past being a seed head and was now just a shell of it’s former self. I think it’s still pretty looking.

Bee Balm seed head

Bee Balm is lovely in the garden and it attracts butterflies and I believe Hummingbirds. Unfortunately every good flowering plant eventually dies down in my Zone 5b Toronto garden.

This is the seed head of the perennial Bee Balm. The plant renews itself each year, but it’s seed head helps ensure that the plant is reseeded and new plants grow around the older plants each year creating an ever growing clump that must occasionally be divided or made smaller so as not to crowd out surrounding plants.
