I’m in the process of moving Tricia’s Musings over to it’s new location https://www.feverishthoughts.com and I think I know what I’m doing. Maybe … we’ll see. Anyway, I’ve copied all of the files and I’m ready to move them over to the new site but I’m in the process of trying to move the sql database.
Any help out there? Do I just use the export function in phpmyadmin? exporting it to the new databases name?
The site is still going to be on the same hosting server. It will just be under a new domain on that server.
Another idea. Can I just use the change directory function in wordpress’ option section? Then move the files and somehow the magic within wordpress will let my sql database know that the address of the site is different but the data base should remain the same?
Is anyone out there? If you have tried something like this before, by all means help me out.
Thank you!

Much depends on what type of sql dbase it is and whether or not you use relative or fixed references to the dbase location and most importantly if the name of the dbase and the access codes are the same.
The dbase itself does not care about the domain while the access code may use a dns lookup to find the physical address of the machine on which the dbase is located.
In most apps the address is a relative address on the same machine thus not important. If the dbase is the same and the access codes are the same than exporting from one machine to the other will not create any problems.

You should be able to use the WordPress interface to export this to a file, and then, having setup WordPress there, import the file into the database there.

I hate to dispute David, but the database does care about your URL. You’ll need to export your db using either PHPMyAdmin or Skippy’s Backup plugin. Then you’ll need to open the .sql file in a text editor to replace all references to the old domain with appropriate references to the new domain before importing it on your new domain.
The WP Codex has detailed instructions on the entire process here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress
I’m pretty handy with this sort of thing. If you need assistance, I’d be happy to help.

its actually very simple, if you can generate a sql script using phpmyadmin copy/paste and click on go.
if you have any doubt email me.
