Do you ever wonder how people make avatars to use for the gravatar.com photo in comments, or avatars that are used in forums, and side bars and in some cases even site headers?
It’s not all that hard really. All you need to do is go to a site such as Thedollpalace.com and click on Dress Up Games and start following the instructions to make your very on “doll” that’s dressed exactly the way you want him or her to be.
You can choose from a number of different doll types- Princess, New Emo, Fashion, Angels, Gothic, Celebrity, Halloween, Preps, mermaids, Christmas, Hippies, Thanksgiving, Shuni, Summer and Winter Fairies, Guys, Unique, Christmas and winter, Fairy, Pirates, original, Community, Emoz, Thematic, Babies, Greek Goddess, Diva, Bonita, Glamour, Goth, lolita and Silence doll types. Isn’t that an amazing number of choices that you can select from? If I’m not mistake you can even mix and match between the styles and doll types in order to create your own very unique doll.
A blogger that I know recently had an avatar contest on her site. She had people make up different avatars that she could use to represent her site, or herself on forums, and in chat groups and she recently picked a winner from all the submissions that she had. I can’t remember what her prize offering was, but it was a good one.
You could use an idea like that to get people to participate on your site. Contests are always a great idea on blogs. Anything that gets people interacting more often and visiting your site is always good.
Little girls always like dress up games and I’m sure you could amuse a child easily but setting them in front of the computer and showing them how to use the Dollpalace.com site. In fact you might be surprised at just how good they might be at creating new designs! Before you know it they’ll be hooked on Dollmaker.
Give the site a try. It’s easy to use because everything is drag and drop. It’s kind of fun too!

Hey Tricia, I’ve bumped into that topic and
I thought i might be able to draw your attention.
When you say “create your own avatar” I’m immediately thinking of what we do – Upload a single photo and create a 3d talking avatar for multiple uses (HeadMaker)
Here is a link to a short demo – http://www.gizmoz.com/create/head
Once you’re done you can use the avatar for making video calls on Skype or IM on almost all major apps..
If you liked what you saw and wish to try the HeadMaker (it’s on private beta now..) i’ll be more than happy to give you access.
Thanx for your time,
Amit.
