I was just thinking about two of my friends that I haven’t seen in a very long time. Funny that both of them now live on the other side of the country in Vancouver yet they don’t even know each other.
I was thinking about them in part because I haven’t seen either of them for quite a while and also because I was reading a story about the increase in online dating and how many people are having success with it and as it turns out both of my friends ended up meeting the men they eventually married through online dating sites or communities like Meet You Later. I’m not sure if that was the one, one of them used or not. Don’t quote me!
I think they are the only friends of mine that I know of who ended up marrying a person they met online, but I know several men and women who regularly meet others online and then in real life and begin dating.
I wonder … how many of you have met someone through the internet, not necessarily a dating service, and started dating or even married?
Again I need to find a non-ajax poll to use on this site. If anyone knows of a good one that doesn’t slow down site load I’d love to hear about it.

I met someone online by accident, I wasn’t looking to meet anyone at the time, but we met-up and hit it off really well. As of Sept. 1 2007, we have been married for 6 years. We only knew each other for about 3 months when we got married.

kinda creepy but my Grandma met her husband on the internet after my Grandpa passed away…guess it’s not creepy ;), people like to be with other people and the internet is becoming a great social tool. First impression via picture is a lot different than real life, but with the videos like on YouTube the first impressions are becoming more real…I enjoyed your post and if I’m ever single I’ll troll the net for my future bride ๐

I was looking for resources on how to refinance home mortgage when I met my boyfriend online. We chatted for over 3 months now and plan to see each other in person. Who knows where that will lead us…

Hey Tricia, I was reading your post and looked to the right at the diamond quiz and had to stop reading to try it!!! I’m a princess diamond – what a surprise ๐
Eeeeek… online dating scares the crap out of me – thank goodness I’m married and not looking! I think if I was single I’d get a dog…

I haven’t dated anyone from an online dating agency. It sounds risky, but think there are genuine women out there.

I met my husband online, but not on the internet. I met him when I ran an online BBS years ago, before the World Wide Web was even invented. I had a social for my users, he showed up and the rest is history.

While I can see the benefits of online dating (getting to connect with someone without putting as much on the line, or the risk of putting yourself out there as much) it seems like something I wouldn’t want to do. To a degree, being able to meet someone through your established social networks seems to be a very good route. From what I hear, all of my friends have had disastrous results from online dating.

I actually dated someone I met online for a year or so. I wasn’t looking for anyone, but we started talking and eventually met and realized we were pretty great together.

Around 6 years ago, when hubby and myself 1st split up, I reconnected with a guy I had meet years early, we dated for awhile but the relationship just wasn’t meant to be and he soon faded out of the picture.

One good thing about the internet is you can check out a lot more people in a shorter space of time; statistically, you therefore have a much better chance of finding a suitable match.

I guess some of us are too old to get in on that action… I’m happily married, so I guess I’ll just have to watch.
p.s. Congrats Hoto!

DATE online? you mean meet online then date?
or is chatting over the internet now considered a date?

My sister met her husband online and he moved to her state within a few months of their meeting. They’ve been together close to 10 years, I think. A friend of mine moved from Ohio to Colorado to be with her boyfriend 4 years ago.
I’m currently dating someone that I met through a personal ad I’d had up for years and mostly given up on. It feels like it might last long-term, but we’re taking it slow.

I met my husband of 6 years through an AOL site that I am not sure is still functional. We were both living in CA at the time and I was moving to a new area and just wanted to check out some of the guys that were living in the area. I really wasn’t looking for anyone because I was moving into an apartment with a girlfriend and we were going to be living 5 minutes (walking distance) from the beach…so we were planning on being the fun, single girls.
Well, I met my husband and we started dating right before I moved down there. Needless to say, my roommate wasn’t thrilled that she didn’t have a buddy to hang out with, but she was happy for me that I met my husband. And now we have 2 sons together. Good things can happen from internet dating.
