Ok, I’ve always thought that my Labrador Retriever puppy might be part goat due to the way she eats grass, but now I’m starting to think that my supposedly purebred lab might have a little Bulldog in her too.
Why? Well this weeks she’s been a farting machine!
She’s never been one to pass much gas. Oh occasionally when she’s squatted to do a movement we’ll hear a little phwtttt, but that’s about it.
She was just lying on the floor sleeping near me a few minutes ago and I actually heard her fart five or six times! Stinky ones too!
We haven’t changed her diet (well other than to eliminate Nutro Natural Choice Large breed puppy food about a month ago due to concerns as several dogs have fallen severely ill or died after eating it lately!) or anything else. The only big change for her is that she went into heat a week ago Wednesday or Thursday (10 or 11 days ago). I’m really starting to think that hormonal changes might be causing her gas.
I wonder if her gas is causing my headache? There’s a little more methane in the air these days – in my home at least! Yes – I still have a headache/migraine – it seems to change in severity so I’m calling it a combo. I’ve had this headache since sometime Monday … about the time Midnights farts really started up. See … there might be a connection.
I wonder if you can give dogs Beano? If you can maybe I could add a few drops to her meals for a day and see if it helped? ๐

Mrs. Mecomber – LOL well I’m pretty sure cats fart too!
Tricia says
xmarks – oh I’m not home alone, hubbies here too and you’ll note I’m not blaming him either!
It’s definitely the dog!
Poor thing – I hope she doesn’t have gas pains. ๐

Oh my … I feel your pain! Doggie farts are the worst.
But don’t give pooch any OTC medications without checking with the vet first. You’d be amazed as to what can hurt them.

We did have a gas problem with Max while he was eating puppy food. I don’t know if it was too rich or had a specific ingredient that tends to be in puppy foods, but the problem subsided when we switched to the adult food.
I think Beano is supposed to be “natural” so I don’t see how it could hurt, but maybe a call to the vet to confirm might be a good idea.

I have this problem with my dalmation. She is a great dog but it gets to the point where I have to tell her to leave the room and I always have some air freshener handy, because its disgusting. We have tried some anti-fart stuff we picked up from Petco but it didn’t help at all.

My late Boston Terrier would fart like crazy. We gave him beano drops in his food every day for a while. It worked a little bit. Beano is just an enzyme that is supposed to help digestion.
The vet said the farting had to do with the “pushed in” or “shortened” shape of the dog’s nose. Apparently the shape causes gulping of air when they eat out of a bowl, so the vet recommended he eat off a flat surface. We tried feeding him off a clean plastic frisbee, and it worked ok, but the dog pushed the frisbee all over the floor, so that didn’t last long.
Eventually we just lived with the gas. Sweetest dog ever.
