Do you use Twitter?

January 6, 2009 by Tricia

I joined twitter well over a year ago, but it’s only in the last month or so that I’ve really started to use this fantastic social networking tool.

Actually I have been using twitterfeed to post new blog post announcements to Twitter, but since that was all that I was doing for most of the first year that I was a Twitter member, you can’t really say I was using it well. Now that I’m finding new friends and gaining followers I’ve started interacting with others on Twitter and it’s a lot of fun.

Do you use Twitter? If you do, please feel free to check out my Twitter page and follow me if you like what you see.

If you don’t use Twitter, what are you waiting for? As I said above it’s a great way to not only promote your blog posts, but to also connect with people who have similar interests or sites in similar niches.

Update: Kelly just came up with a great idea. If you use Twitter post your Twitter link in the comments and follow the commenters that leave a twitter link. Sounds like a great way to make some new blogger/ Twitter friends.

I love Twitter AND TwitterFeed. I think it’s a great way to discover new bloggers. I lurk here anyway, but I did click over from your Twitter link 😉

Yes, I use Twitter, and have been since early last year, but heavily since August. It is a magnificent way to bring traffic to your blog, as well as find interesting people to follow and interact with. It’s absolutely the best tool to use for many reasons.

Oh, and I also use TwitterFeed. 😉 And I have been following you too.

Hi Tricia, I’m back! Since this is a Twitter post, I thought maybe we could all post our Twitter links and follow each other. That is, if it’s ok with you.

    Here’s mine: http://www.twitter.com/kellyvbrown

If you oppose this idea, feel free to just delete this comment. I don’t want you to think I’m trying to spam. I’m just a social media fanatic and I love finding and getting to know interesting new people.

    Cheers!

Hey Steven thanks for your comment. Nice to hear you found this post on Google.

Hmmm how to find people to follow and to get others to follow you …

Well when I first started on Twitter in November 2007 I was on a Forum and people started listing their Twitter url and we (a group of blogging friends) started following each other … so that’s how I started.

Once you have a few people following you, their replies to your tweets are shown on their twitter pages so that’s one way new people might find you and or that you might find new people.

What I’ve done, especially over the last month, is use some of the Twitter directories (twellow.com for example ) to find Twitter users who are interested in some of the same things that I am. I’ve also used the Twitter search tool to type in a topic – say “Dogs” to see who’s talking about that subject and then I check out their twitter pages and their websites if they list them and decide from there if I’d like to follow them. Not everyone follows back, but at least half or more seem to.

I also look around on some of my favorite blogs to see if they list their twitter url and follow them from there. Plus, I’ve also taken a look at some of my blogger friends followers and found people that I know or that seem interesting to follow as well.

There might be easier ways to find people to follow and people who will follow you, but I like to check out what people are tweeting about and their sites and if they seem interesting I follow them. Plus, once you start getting a decent following you’ll likely start getting new follow requests daily or weekly. Lately I’ve been getting 10 to 30 a day.

I did notice that you have your Tweets protected. Many Twitter users find that discouraging because it’s hard to decide if a person might be interesting to follow if they can’t see what you’re tweeting about. Plus you have to ask to be allowed to follow and lets face it … people are lazy and if there’s nothing there to make making that request compelling – why make it? It’s up to you, but if you want to get more followers I’d unprotect your tweets.

    Hope the tips helped!

Laurie – thanks for lurking. 😉 Yes I find that Twitter is a great way to meet others too. I’m still getting the hang of it, but so far I love it.

Cindy I’ve been concentrating on finding new people to follow and getting new followers, but I still need to learn to use Twitter effectively. I seem to only go on late at night when all my other work is done (or I’m too tired to do anymore work!). LOL

Come back and leave your Twitter link if you’d like to maybe pick up a few more followers.

Hey Kelly I like your idea of people leaving their Twitter url in this post. I even updated my post to ask people to leave their url.

I’ve been a Twitter user for over a year but I think I’m hesitant to get too into tweeting. Years ago I really got into chat and oh I wasted so many hours each day chatting with friends … I’d hate to get back into that, but somehow I don’t think I would ’cause I have too much on my plate now. LOL

Lilly I’m following you now too. Added you as a friend on Plurk as well. I actually tried to add you as a friend on Plurk earlier today, but doesn’t it figure they’d go into maintenance mode right after I signed in? LOL I hope you enjoy Twitter!

Twitterfeed is pretty easy to use Jean_Luc. I like it since I have several blogs so it makes it easier for me to broadcast new posts.

Cah come back and leave your Twitter url. Hopefully a few others will leave their Twitter url as well and we can all find new people to follow.

I’m still learning how to use Twitter properly as well. As I said I use it to announce new blog posts, but I also try to comment on interesting Tweets or sometimes I’ll post a question. The other day I posted what I was going to have for dinner when my husband got home and asked others what they were having for dinner and I got back a bunch of interesting responses. It made me wish we were going to have something more interesting to eat! LOL

Just get out there and Tweet. Be yourself and people will respond. 🙂

I was looking around for information about using twitter in Google blog search, and I found u. LOL

I’m new with twitter, so I’m shocked when I checked how many people you followed, and how many people are following you. How do you find so many people in twitter? Do you have any tips for Twitter newbie like me 🙂

    Thanks

    Hi Tricia,

I like twitter, and have been using it for several months now. I probably don’t totally take advantage of it as a social networking tool. But, I do use it to keep up with a few friends … and when we recently had an Island wide power outage here in Hawaii, it really did prove to be quite a useful way to get the most up-to-date information.

    My twitter ID is @alohateam
