I’ve started using my Wii on a regular basis again. You might remember my posts when I purchased the Wii Fit and then the Wii Console (that I didn’t know I needed for Wii Fit) on Ebay? Well I used the Wii through January, but then my Crohn’s got worse and I just couldn’t use the game for a while.
I use the Wii mostly for exercising or playing games that get me moving. I haven’t used the Wii Fit all that much, but I’ve been trying out My Fitness Coach and the brand new EA Sports Active and I really like both programs. I like how they vary the exercise routines and I can use the Wii Fit board with some of the EA Sports Active workouts too.
Game wise I’ve been using Wii Sports to play tennis, boxing and bowling and I also have Wii Ski and a few other games that get you up off the couch and moving.
Last week I bought Mario kart as I thought it looked fun. My husband and I both played a few games one evening, but I didn’t really like it all that much. Maybe I should have rented it and tried it out first? Uh huh.
I’m glad I bought the Wii because with Crohn’s – when it’s bad, I can go through long periods where I’m not all that active due to the pain and other symptoms that I have so I’m trying to use it when I can just to up my activity level a little bit. Of course when I’m feeling semi-ok I also try to get outside and go for walks, work in my gardening (I have gardening marathons where I’m in the garden for 8 hours at a time) and do other things … but the Wii fits in when I’m not well enough to do a lot of outdoor activities.
I was wondering if any of you are also using PS3 players? And if you are, do you also have a Wii or have you tried playing any Wii games? I was wondering how the two game systems compare. Obviously my main goal with the Wii is to get a little more active and to use some of the great fitness programs that are available. However I was wondering – game wise – how do the two systems compare? It seems like there are a lot more true action games in PS3 so if you are a true gamer it might be more suitable to use PS3 over the Wii system.

I don’t think I ever evolved into the Wii!

Seach for nice walking routes around your place in a distance that you can walk in 90 min the most, get your mp3 player with you and start walking. You will soon get used to it. Make sure you have your favorite songs in the MP3 otherwise you will soon get bored.
When i was going for a walk, i usually took a cereal bar with me and i has a cup of milk before i start walking. It really worked.

I think its awesome that Wii is encouraging others to become active through playing video games! Obesity is a serious problem in the US! I am considering purchasing a Wii now.

I want to get a wii. I played wii fit at my brother’s house, it was surprisingly, a lot more work than I expected. It even set up a work out plan to reach my goal weight. Overall it was pretty impressive.
I felt the same about mario kart. I didn’t really like the way you have to turn the wii-mote to steer.

We got a Wii a year ago, and I’ve lost a TON of weight – after I got past several dozen sore muscles and joints! Who knew Nintendo was aiming to hurt the loyal adults that supported them for years.

Wii Fit will cost you some sweat easily. I don’t have it, but I play at my friend house. I can’t imagine that I can exercise with lots of fun like that. However, I’m not a good player. Perhaps, my balance is just poor.

I have and play on both Wii and Play station.
Wii is excellent if you want action or sweat. I just don’t like the graphics. I love Play Station because graphics are very realistic.
But of course you do not have to choose either. You can buy both and play both too – not just at the same time.

I love my Wii. I started with the Wii fit and got tired of it quickly. To much time spent changing from exercise to exercise.
We bought My Fitness Coach and Wii active. I personally love the My Fitness Coach. My wife love Wii Active. I just like the idea that I don’t have to add a lot of feedback and can just exercise with Coach.

man wii is well worth it. wii golf is really addictive! you don’t mention the golf, do you not like it?
as I get older I find myself preferring fun kind of games than gory, violent games, or car games, so i much prefer the wii to the ps3.

I also love ea active. I haven’t gotten my fitness coach because I didn’t know if it was worth it. Another fun game for the Wii is WarioWare. It isn’t too active, but it a bit and it is fun. I think if you are trying to be active, the PS3 probably isn’t for you.

The one WII game I know is that kind where you play tennis. I see it everytime I pass this particular mall near the office. Kind of expensive of course. Perhaps I’ll have a chance to have one very soon, hopefully.

I guess wii and PS3 are totally different systems, and in many ways they are not on the same level to compare. For example, if you talk about graphic details and visual satisfaction, I don’t think Wii has anything remarkable ( it never intended to either). While if you mean the interactivity of waggling with a Wii, then PS3 is just a totally different thing. I personally was never fond of Wii, since if I needed exercise, I would go and play tennis in the field. People already ended up doing exercise in gyms, and now with Wii, I don’t know what would be the next?

I have heard from friends that Wii can definitely make one physically fit. But, I just can’t help but to be tied down with my favorite hobby which is doing embroidery crafts. I am trying to find ways though to spare some time with fitness activities.

This is one of the many reasons I love the Wii. You can use it to keep fit. There are enough games including the Wii Fit that can be used to keep you fit. It will never replace the gym as it’s very restricted in what it can do but in terms of aerobic exercises it is really good! 🙂

I love the wii fit and Nintendo. My husband bought it for me for my birthday. We love it!!! We enjoy playing it together and all the different games.

So sorry to hear about Crohn’s. That must be incredibly frustrating. But, glad to hear the Wii gives you an alternative to traditional running, biking, etc.
I would love to see Wii Swimming. I know that sounds nuts, but it would be set up such that you lay flat (elevated) and mimic swimming movements.

I think it is impossible to compare a wii verses a PS3. The Wii broke new barriers in that its more about getting out the chair and getting involved. I believe the popularity in the wii is that everyone can have a go and its so easy to play. Can you imagine a family sitting round a PS3 pushing buttons….. games like Wii Sports has huge family appeal and the secret is not in the quality of the game but what the games are and the interaction. I have every console ever invented but I was tired of pain in my fingers from playing 8 hours straight. The Wii is a pleasure to play and it takes away the image of gamers sitting in a dark room for days on end when they have just bought the latest release.

Hi Tricia, I came across your website and I love the way you share your life with us. It’s good to get some kind of workout even if it’s with your wii or working out at home on your fitness gym or getting out and working in the garden on a nice sunny day.
I know this post was written a year ago, but I like to know if you’re still staying fit with your wii?
Great website by the way.

Rich I’m still using my Wii for fitness but not as much as I was a year ago. It’s a great way to workout … I’m just being a bit lazy and not using it as much as I should be. Lately I’ve been doing the Gold’s Gym cardio boxing. I love it.

i think the wii fit is a great concept which can be very effective for some people. I personally don’t use it as i prefer to use the gym with proper free-weights etc, but for someone like my mum its perfect!
It is by no means, the ‘best’ way to work out and tone up, but it’s 10 times better than doing nothing!
