The view outside my door was pretty nice today

September 22, 2010 by Tricia

I had some nice entertainment, or maybe I should rephrase that and say eye candy, right outside my door earlier today.

My neighbors were getting some work done on their walkway – having some interlocking brickwork put in and the crew that came to do the work, well, they certainly weren’t hard on the eyes!

Hey, women do look too. We just don’t talk about it as much as guys. LOL

I brought my dog out a few times for her little walks so she could do her business and so I could uhm … browse. I mean … I wanted to see what work they were doing – maybe my husband and I might want to have interlocking brick installed in our front walkway too? Uh huh.

I know hefting bricks and that kind of work is heavy manual labor, but at least two of the guys must lift weights and or must take muscle building supplements because they were HUGE! I don’t know how guys can do anything with muscles that big .. I mean, how do you buy clothes?

Anyway, it was nice to have such a nice view right outside my front door – on the first day of Fall. I’m sure I won’t get many more views like that until next year!

BoardWalk Empire and all the other new shows this week

September 19, 2010 by Tricia

So who else is watching Boardwalk Empire right now?

I’ve been looking forward to watching this show all week. We only just started watching it – but so far I’m impressed. The music, the characters, the cinematography – I love it. I think we’re going to enjoy this new series.

Earlier this evening we watched another new show on HBO called “Call me Fitz”. That one was interesting. I’m still not sure whether I like it or not. The main character is a self obsessed used car salesmen who’s self conscience has come to life to make him a better man. The girl scout troop that plagued him in the first episode was kind of funny – although most of them looked a little old for girl scouts, and they all must have found the best acne treatment because their skin was perfect. LOL

Last night I programmed our PVR for the coming week. I can’t believe how many TV shows are coming back this week – and how many new shows are premiering! Most seasons it seems the shows trickle back slowly, but this year it seems that 80% of them are coming back THIS week. My PVR is going to be full by the end of the week.

Ok I’d better get back to watching Boardwalk Empire. If you watched it too let me know what you thought of it.

We had a fantastic long weekend

September 7, 2010 by Tricia

You know what? I had a really good weekend!

I had sort of been dreading the long weekend because I’d started a new medication for my migraines about three weeks ago and it’s making me feel really odd (spacey, forgetful, mixing up words, tingling hands and feet etc) and on top of that my nephew and niece (and her fiance) were coming in from Chicago for the weekend, and my in-laws were coming in to town for a day or two to see all of us.

When I’m not feeling all that well I don’t really like having other people around or worse, I don’t like having plans to go out, especially when I’m not sure if I’m going to be feeling up to going out.

Luckily everything turned out ok.

My husband picked up our niece and nephew t the airport and took them to our family friends house where they were going to stay for the weekend. Oh and on the way there they stopped off at a restaurant bar and my husband bought my nephew his first legal drink. He’s 19 and thus it was legal for him to drink in Ontario. Our nephew was thrilled … oh and he’s the one who asked Chris to buy him his first legal drink. LOL

The next day my husband went over to the house with our dog to see the kids and to drive them to where ever they wanted to go in the city. He did that every morning – Saturday, Sunday and Monday so he got to spend a bit more time with them and they got a lift to where ever they wanted to start there day.

Surprisingly – for a 19 year old and two 23 year olds they didn’t spend a lot of time going out and partying. They did hit a few bars, especially on Saturday, but they didn’t go out clubbing like we thought they would. Instead they did things like taking a tour of the Rogers center, walking around the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition), touring a micro-brewery (SteamWhistle) and tasting their beers, going to the CN Tower, shopping, and going to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

I stayed home on the Saturday and just rested up.

On Sunday my in-laws came into town and we got together in the late afternoon with them and the kids at an Irish restaurant called Murphy’s Law and had dinner. My father in law usually doesn’t drink, but when he does he normally only has one drink. That night he had 4 double Bailey’s! It was interesting!

After dinner the in-laws went back to their hotel. Usually they stay at our house, but we’d warned them that with this medication that I’m on I’m feeling really off and that maybe staying over wouldn’t be so great. Usually they come in threes – Chris’ mom and dad and his aunt (although this time Chris’ aunt didn’t come) … so that’s a lot of people to land on someones doorstep when you’re not feeling so hot.

I wasn’t feeling too bad after dinner – a little wonky … I’ve found if I don’t drink enough water on this new medication (Topamax) I kind of feel drunk (and no I didn’t have any drinks with dinner) so we drove the kids back to the house and sat with them on the back patio for an hour or so talking. They were kind of tired. The day before they had walked everywhere they went .. we worked it out and we figured that they walked over 15 miles!

The next day, yesterday, was Labour Day Monday – my Birthday. So we all met up at Cora’s downtown for brunch. Well … ok breakfast … but it was 1 pm. I haven’t been to a Cora’s for a long long time and man – it’s delicious! I had French toast Brioche covered in a mound of assorted fruit, and a sunny side up egg and a few slices of bacon. I think it’s called “1990’s Harvest” on the menu. Delicious!

Shortly after we finished our meal at Cora’s it was time to take the kids to the Island Airport for their flight to Chicago. However, since there was a little bit of time before they had to board the Ferry to the island we walked over to an Irish Memorial.

I have to admit that I only glanced at the huge black stones at the Irish memorial at the port because just as we reached the memorial area jets flew overhead and I realized that the airshow was starting.

I’ve never been to an airshow! So while most of our relatives looked at the Irish memorial my husband and I stood by the waters edge and gazed up at the sky as jets and the famous Canadian Snowbirds did amazing areal feats overhead. I never thought I’d enjoy an airshow that much, but I loved it.

As we walked back to the Ferry area and airport check-in the airshow was still going on, so I was a little distracted in those last few minutes with our nephew, niece and her fiance. I actually almost tripped as I was walking along. Someone had stopped right in front of us to watch the jets do a fly by and I just missed tripping on the wheels of one of the most unusual baby strollers I’ve ever seen. I stopped long enough to ask the lady what it was and she said it was called a phil and teds explorer. I couldn’t help laughing at the name – do you remember the movie – Phil and Ted’s excellent Adventures?

Anyway … The weekend that I thought I’d struggle through because of in-laws and relatives being around turned out to be quite nice. I had two fantastic birthday celebration meals and seeing the airshow just topped off my birthday. I loved it.

How was your long weekend?

A music filled weekend

June 25, 2010 by Tricia

My husband, Chris, and I are having a very music oriented weekend.

It started earlier this evening. The music documentary “It Might Get Loud” with Jimmy Page, Jack Black and The Edge is on the Movie Network this evening and we taping it and watching it at the same time. It’s amazing! We both love all three of these masters of guitar.

I’m also taping Micheal Jackson’s “This is it”. We weren’t huge fans of Michael, but he was extremely talented and I think it will be interesting to see this last documentary of his.

Tomorrow we’ll be going to a Vintage Guitar Festival. I’m sure my husband will be drooling the whole time … even though most of his guitars are vintage pieces as well.

Then in the afternoon/ evening we’ll be going to some of the free or almost free events at the Toronto Jazz Festival.

You see what I mean … Music all weekend of one kind or another. Actually very different kinds of music really, but we enjoy it all.

Last weekend we went to the Beaches Rib Fest and they had live bands playing there too. We bought two full racks of ribs from two different vendors (and ate them from Saturday through to Monday), had a beer in the beer tent and watched a Funk band while we were there. It was fun.

On Sunday my husband is going out of town because his father is having an operation (gallbladder) on Monday so we also need to get some shopping done before he goes. I actually want to get out and take a look at laptops. The one I’m typing this post on it getting old and a little sluggish … so maybe I’ll take a peek and see what’s out there, maybe an Asus or something will fit the bill as a back up laptop.

I’ll bring my camera with me to the Vintage guitar and jazz festivals so expect a post or two with some pictures. Soon.

What are your plans for the weekend? Anything exciting?

Lots to do this weekend

June 18, 2010 by Tricia

The weekend is just starting and I’m already tired.

I spent a good part of the afternoon cleaning the house – sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, windexing and so on. The house needed a good cleaning!

The rest of the weekend will be busy as well, but mostly outdoors. We have some gardening to do – mostly tidying the garden as in dead heading our many many roses and putting in some stakes because the roses are flopping over.

This weekend the Beach Rib Fest and Taste of Little Italy is on, and Luminato is still going on as well. We plan to try hitting all three events. Of course there’s also the Much Music awards on Sunday. I doubt we’ll go to that, but it would be kind of interesting to see it. I went a few years ago, but not recently.

Ok time to go watch a movie and put some cream on my eczema. I’m not sure why it’s flaring up but I want it gone.

What are you doing this weekend? Does your city or town have any interesting events going on this weekend?
