Chris does it again

October 22, 2006 by Tricia

I’m supposed to be at a get-together tonight (Saturday). I don’t want to call it a party, because it isn’t really. It’s more of a Fund raiser.

One of the very nice people that both my husband and I work with at the hospital was diagnosed with cancer a couple of months ago and given only 5 months to live. I’m not sure of exactly what kind of cancer she has but it’s obviously a very bad case. The dinner party fundraiser is being held to raise some money to help her kids when she’s gone.

I’m not feeling very well today at all, so unfortunately I decided not to attend the fundraiser.

Chris on the other hand is there right now. He told me that the party was supposed to be semi-formal. Would you care to know what his idea of semi-formal is?

Faded, almost green grey tinged blue jeans – I guess that’s the “semi” part – and running shoesA suit Jacket – dark blue and wrinkled since he never took it out of the travel bag since he last wore it, nor did he get it cleaned.A white dress shirt

    An Irish green tie

The whole outfit wouldn’t look that bad if 1. he didn’t wear that colour tie, and 2. if you disregard the wrinkles in his suit jacket, but all together it’s too much. The green tie clashes with the jeans and slightly with the suit jacket.

I tried to get him to put on a tie of a different colour. No- his other ties are grey and blue and that’s too funeral like. Alright then … I seem to remember him having a nice red one, but he made it clear that he was going with the green tie.

So I tried another approach pointing out the wrinkles in his suit jacket and suggested that he wear his grey suit jacket, or he has a slightly more casual beige one. No, he doesn’t like the gray one and didn’t look for the beige one.

Oh well, knowing him that suit jacket has been off pretty much since he arrived at the dinner party fundraiser. If the other guests at the party were lucky hopefully he removed the tie too! If he didn’t remove the tie he’s probably really clashing right now.

I love the guy, but he leaves me shaking my head an awful lot more than I think I should be shaking it. LOL Men!

Update:

Chris didn’t stay at the dinner / fundraiser too late. He came home at about ten o’clock since he had to work at 7 this morning. I had forgotten to mention that along with the tacky green tie and wrinkled jacket he was also bringing his guitar.

We had received a call from one of the organizers of the party at about 5 pm on Saturday with a special request for Chris to bring his guitar and play at the party. He did of course! He never misses a chance to play in front of an audience. Apparently, about 200 people attended the dinner so he had a good sized audience. I wish I’d been there to see him perform. He’s always entertaining.

Rude shoppers!

October 18, 2006 by Tricia

Wow, Monday must have been a big day for me since I keep writing about it. Actually, I guess it was since I haven’t been getting out much lately. Oh boy! A trip to the doctors, two drug stores, a hardware / automotive store (Canadian Tire), and then back home again. That’s a big day for me lately. I know, it’s sad, but true.

Anyway, enough about me, I’m ranting here!

During our trip to the first drug store I got some prescriptions filled. Often if you have other products the pharmacy clerk will ring them in for you right at the pharmacy counter, but yesterday, even though there were four Pharmacy workers behind the counter they didn’t. They sent us up to the cashiers at the front, where naturally only one cashier was working.

A group of three women were in front of us. One middle aged, one slightly older and then there was grandma. They stood near the end of the cashiers counter and had their products rung in. Unfortunately they also had a baby in a huge stroller between the three of them and my husband and I. So, even though they weren’t actually standing at the counter space where the next customer might put down the products they were about to purchase, we still couldn’t get there to put our stuff down because of the baby in the stroller – the one that the three women were totally ignoring.

The store was having a sale on the 12 packs of pop, so my strong husband was carrying two 12’s in one hand, and a third 12 in his other hand. I was holding my prescriptions and a few other products – namely some store brand benadryl since my meds are making me itch all the time now.

After 10 minutes were were getting a little tired of this. It seems the ladies had made their purchases, but they were taking turns having their lotto tickets checked to see if they’d won the big one, and if they found out that they’d won a free ticket, or a few dollars they were then standing there picking out their new numbers and having the cashier put the new tickets through.

Finally, Chris, who doesn’t get frustrated easily, moved the babies stroller forward, saying something to the effect of “I hope you don’t mind ladies, but my arms are getting tired” and he proceeded to put the three 12’s of pop on the counter.

One of the ladies had been staring at me on and off while they purchased their items and lotto tickets. When my husband moved the carriage she really gave me a mean stare. Why me- I didn’t do it. I guess it was the look of frustration on my face that attracted her attention.

I think they were just rude. I’m sure if it had been Chris and I standing there blocking the aisle that someone would have said something, and I’m certain that the lady that was staring me down would have put up a fuss.

I hate it when people are rude. Don’t you? Tell me about your latest encounters with rude people.

My husband paints his nails!

October 17, 2006 by Tricia

That’s right, he’s painting his nails again.

You might remember my story about him getting fake nails for the first time? That’s occurred at least three times since April. No my husbands not really odd, well he is, but shhhhhhh don’t let him know I told you that. No he’s been wearing the fake nails – only on his right hand – because he’s a guitar player and he can use the fake nails to pic the strings on the guitar better.

He’s got really thin weak nails and by having the fake nails applied to the finger nails on his right hand he can use his nails rather than a pick most of the time.

The unfortunate truth about fake nails though is that they end up thinning out and weakening your natural nails when you use them.

So Chris has been pestering the cosmetic advisor’s at drug store cosmetic counters, and the ones in the cosmetics departments of many major department stores. I thought they’d look at him strangely, but for the most part they don’t. In fact one told me just yesterday that she’s seen it all, and nothing that people do in stores, or the questions that she’s asked, surprise her anymore.

In fact she told me a remarkable story yesterday of a lady that did a pregnancy test right in the cosmetics department of the drug store! I’d really like to know how someone managed that. I mean don’t you have to pee on a stick for all of the instant pregnancy tests? If you do, that means that this lady was so desperate to know if she was pregnant or not, that she had to have peed right there in the store!

If I ever get tired of working in the Emergency Department, but still crave a taste of the strange, I think I’ll apply to work as a cosmetician at a drug store. Seems that they see the kind of strange stuff there that’s in line with the kind of things I’m used to seeing in the ER.

Back to Chris. I think and hope that he’s given up on the fake nails. I really didn’t like the look, and they felt so creepy when he’d touch me with the nails. *shivers* He’s been spending all that time talking to cosmetic specialists trying to find out what other kinds of products he can put on his nails to strengthen them.

Since yesterday he’s been applying a liquid product called Ecrinal to his nails three times a day. It’s made from the oils found in horse hair. It’s supposed to be the best out there. We’ll see. Three times a day for seven days and hopefully Chris nails will start to become stronger. I, for one, hope it works so I don’t have to see a return of the creepy fake nails.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for my thin nails metro sexual husband?

Strange Weather

October 10, 2006 by Tricia

I think my husbands in love with a weather man!

It was about five years ago when I first began to suspect that my husband was watching the weather on TV for more than the daily weather report.

I started noticing that he’d pay more attention to the weather report when a certain weather man was on. No. strike that. I think what made me notice his interest was that when other weather men or women did the daily weather he’d switch channels, but he wouldn’t when this particular meteorologist was on.

If Anwar wasn’t on Global he’d switch to another news program or to some other TV show that was on. I’d ask him:

“Why’d you switch the channel? Don’t you want to know what tomorrow going to be like?”

“Nah, it’s ok. let’s watch this.”

Meteorologist Anwar Knight When Anwar, yes that’s the meteorologists name, was doing his weather forcast Chris would watch the TV set intently. He’d get this funny little smile on his face and he’d even … giggle on occasion. WTF?

“Ok Chris, why are you smiling when he’s doing the weather?” I asked one night.

“He’s just funny. I like him.” Chris replied.

“Yah, you like him. Right.”

One day we were in a drug store, and as we approached the cash registers Chris suddenly got all excited and started moving to a particular cashiers line. “I think it’s him!” he said with a smile. “Who?” “It’s the weather guy, you know, Anwar!”.

Chris stood patiently behind him line waiting for his opportunity to strike up a conversation. I can’t remember exactly what he eventually said to him but I think he told him how funny he thinks he is when he does the weather and some other mundane conversation. Anwar clearly was in a hurry or perhaps he recognized the look in my husbands eye and wanted to make a hasty exit.

Now I’ve seen Chris when he’s met celebrities before, and far more famous ones at that, and he usually seems much calmer about it. We’ve run into Getty Lee, the lead singer from Rush, in the liquor store, and Chris even delivered products to his house when he used to deliver non-perishable grocery products way back when.

As the years went by I got used to Chris’ habit of watching this particular weatherman. In fact I generally found it pretty funny, and I’d tend to watch Chris more than the weather report, because he had such a look of adoration in his eyes whenever Anwar’s face was on our television screen.

Sometime during the past year Anwar disappeared.

We stopped watching weather reports. I never new if the next day would be sunny or if it would rain.

Then, one day, Chris was watching CityTV and the weather report started. Chris was about to switch channels when all of a sudden he got that little smile on his face. Yes, Anwar had switch jobs and now he works for CityTV.

My husbands happy because he can now indulge in his little Man Crush, and now I know that it’s going to be cloudy tomorrow with a chance of rain in the evening.

All is well in our little world.

Does anyone else’s husband have a little man crush goin’ on? Are there any women out there that think they’re a little bit in love with another woman on TV? Let me know. I’m sure I’m not alone in this. I’m not, right?

*Chris is aware of this post and it has his stamp of approval. He’s not afraid that he’s less of a man because he’s got a little Man Crush. Yep that’s my guy- secure, confident, and a little in love with a TV personality.

Son of Darth Vader?

September 22, 2006 by Tricia

My 200th Post!

Sleep apnea nose maskThis is what I’m going to be greeted with each night when I go to bed. Lovely huh?

Chris was diagnosed with severe Sleep apnea in June or perhaps early July. Shortly after his diagnosis the company that supplies the machine and mask called and asked that Chris come in to get his machine and be shown how to use the equipment. We didn’t know how much it was going to cost us so we delayed a bit. It turns out that our government actually pays for the machine ($750 or so) but Chris has to pay for the special nose mask and I believe the tubing. I haven’t checked yet but I think I can submit that bill to our medical insurance company and perhaps get some of that money back. I hope so ’cause it cost us over $400.

I still don’t really know what it sounds like other than the light purr of the machine beside the bed. You see, Chris was told to slowly work his way into using the mask all night. Which means he’s only using it for about an hour or two at a time and then taking it off. I’ve been having a very bad week with my pain so I’ve been on the main floor in the living room working on the computer when he’s been trying out this mask.

He’s had the machine for a week or so but hasn’t used it every night. However, on the nights that he does use it for a short while he seems to snore less. Hopefully by the time he works up to wearing it all night we’ll both end up getting better sleep!

I was pretty sure that Chris has sleep apnea for oh, pretty much the whole time we’ve been together (yikes 17 years!). When my doctor was sending me for sleep studies to try to figure out why I can’t sleep after working night shifts (even though I haven’t been working at all lately) I mentioned Chris’ snoring to her and told her that I thought he had sleep apnea, mainly because he snores, snores, then doesn’t seem to breath for a whole minute or so, then the snoring starts up again. As usual I was right.

I’m happy that we’re finally addressing the problem. It’s quite common for people with sleep apnea to end up having heart problems. We’ve already been through a heart scare with Chris. Two years ago he kept passing out at work and he had changes on his electrocardiogram that looked like a very rare cardiac arrhythmia called Brugada. He ended up staying in one of the best hospitals in Toronto for cardiac problems and had many tests, but they couldn’t reproduce the arrhythmia. That’s good, ’cause he would have ended up with a built in defibrillator if they had diagnosed his problem. He has permanent changes to his ECG but the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with his heart. We know something happened but we don’t know what. So far so good though, he’s been feeling pretty good for most of the last year.

I’m hoping that now that we are taking care of the apnea perhaps he’ll do even better, or that at least treating the apnea might prevent further trouble from developing.

Does anyone else have a spouse with apnea? One who uses the breathing machine? Does it make much noise? I hope it doesn’t end up that I feel like I’m sleeping with Darth Vader or something!

God! With my abdominal troubles and Chris questionable heart problems and now sleep apnea it sounds like we’re getting old. We aren’t! Look at that pic of Chris we’re both still relatively young, but I guess we have a few more problems going on then others. Oh well.
