5 Tips To Help You Get To Know Your Neighbours

November 13, 2012 by Trish

It’s always nice to know you have neighbours who you get on with, to call on when you have a power-cut or need to borrow something. It’s simply nice to make friends, and if you can do something so walking outside your door doesn’t require looking straight to the ground pr pretending to be on your phone, even better. When you move to a new home, it can be a little awkward to approach new people and introduce yourself. It’s difficult to know how friendly people are and if the neighbourhood is particularly close. Here, we provide a few tips to getting to know those who live around you:

1: It Starts With One

If you can make friends easily with just one neighbour, you’ll find it a lot easier to get to know people through them. They can invite you to events or socials, which they think you’ll enjoy; and it will always be easier to go to something knowing you already know someone who’ll be there. This person may not be someone you’ll stay friends with forever, but you sometimes have to be ruthless. These first friendships are the hardest to make but it gets easier. You might be surprised to find you quickly connect with one neighbour over similarities in lifestyle or circumstances.

2: Social or Party

A housewarming party is a great way to meet the neighbours. Keep it relaxed and light so people don’t feel like they have to go to great lengths for someone they don’t know at all. Pick a Saturday or Sunday when people won’t have to worry about work the next day. A BBQ, if the weather is nice, or drinks/afternoon tea will do. Don’t make too big a fuss or you might come off as overly pushy. You can determine from this first party who you get on well with and will pursue further relationships with. Also, inviting people into your home makes for good conversation topics regarding interior design and what you’ve done with the house; you may move onto more personal topics like music taste if you have your collection on display. You may even throw a Painting Party, to kill two birds with one stone; get to know your neighbours and decorate your new home at the same time!

3: Show Some Weakness

Sometimes the best relationships come about accidentally or out of things going wrong which are both memorable and provide something to look back and laugh on. When someone has seen you at your worst (figuratively speaking) or in a kerfuffle, the best thing to do is laugh about it which breaks the tension. They’ve probably been through the same thing and understand what it’s like. This might be being locked out or running out of some food ingredient. By sacrificing some face yourself, you’ll make the other person feel more in-control, and they’ll be more receptive. This is why borrowing milk or sugar is such a popular sentiment when people first move into a new home.

4: Be Present and Viewable

Some people go months or even years without getting to know their neighbours. Some work different hours or simply don’t spend enough time in public view to be seen for long and start a conversation. If you have a front garden, make the most of it and be seen in it. Kids can invite the local kids to play, and you can meet their parents through them. Gardening also provides lots to talk about through exchanging tips. These activities can give your neighbours hints about what you like and how they can initiate conversation. This can be harder for those who own or rent in London or other city and urban areas, where front gardens are either smaller or hard to come by.

5: Local Groups

Groups or initiatives like neighbourhood watches are not just about combating local crime, but more so about uniting the community against problems that they all experience; these can include litter, noise, animals and pests, zoning laws etc. It gives a sense of harmless “them vs us” mentality and group spirit. Charity is also a positive that can benefit the local community and which people feel passionate about. It shows one in a good light and gives a chance for people to open up about their own experiences.

Paul recently moved house and as a quiet person, found it difficult to get to know his neighbours at first. With the help of his friend, a party planner, he came up with a few ways to initiate conversation and grow relationships to varying levels of success. This experience has helped him with his latest project, working with an Estate Agents in London.

Taking advantage of the great weather

September 13, 2012 by Tricia

It looks like this is going to be a beautiful week in Toronto. It’s supposed to be sunny and warm all week. Lovely.

I took advantage of the great weather yesterday. I had to go to my new college campus to buy one of my college text books for my online course and since my campus is on the waterfront I took the time to take several pictures while I was there. I love Toronto’s waterfront area. It’s beautiful. There’s so much to do and it’s so pretty!
Sugar Beach Toronto's Waterfront
As it turns out George Brown college moved the nursing division from St. James campus to the Waterfront campus. The Waterfront campus happens to be right beside Sugar beach which is this kind of cool looking fake beach with white sand that over looks the lake. It’s right beside the Redpath sugar plant and I’m sure that’s likely why it’s called Sugar Beach. It’s very pretty with it’s pink umbrellas. Of course, while I enjoyed the sunny day and warm weather, beautiful sites and lovely beach it only served to remind me that in a few short months I’ll be putting up the christmas ornaments. Now isn’t that a scary thought!

Once we were done picking up my text book at the college book store and walking around on the water front my husband suggested we check out something that was pretty much across the street from the college campus. The Sherbourne Common. I really hadn’t heard of this area or seen the cool water features or other green items that were there prior to my visit yesterday, but I was blown away once we got there.

The Sherbourne common has three huge water falls that are composed of water streaming down mesh screens. It’s extremely cool to look at. The water is recycled back into the lake I believe if I read the information correctly. Actually the playground equipment and other materials at the common are all recycle and green materials. I’ll write another post and add more photos but for now, here’s one photo to show you one of the water features in the sunset with the CN Tower in the background.

Have you been enjoying beautiful weather this September?

Are you going to the Taste of the Danforth?

August 10, 2012 by Tricia

I can’t believe that I almost forgot what weekend was coming up. It’s the Taste of the Danforth this weekend! My local Toronto festival. Yeah!

I love going to this food and music festival. It seems to get bigger every year.

There’s always music, games and rides for the kids. Then there’s several band stand areas where international musicians – mostly Greek, but not all, play. There’s also dancing on or at the band stands, beer and wine tents, bubble machines blowing bubbles in the air, food from all the various restaurants along the “GreekTown” stretch of the Danforth. So that means food wise there’s Greek food, Indian food, Spanish food, some North American food, Asian food and I suppose a few other kinds that I can’t remember right now, but those are the main kinds of foods and all of them will be offered for fairly low prices. Oh and they’ll be tasty!

I’m definitely going Friday evening! Anyone else going to the Taste of the Danforth this year?

Who wants Ice Cream?

June 18, 2012 by Tricia

I’m an admitted chocoholic but while I’ll eat the occasional piece of chocolate I rarely eat desert or have things like ice cream. In fact, most years I can count on one hand – often one finger the amount of times I have ice cream!

It’s not that I don’t like ice cream. I do, I just don’t love it enough to eat it regularly. Lucky for me I happen to live very close to what I consider one of the best Ice Cream Parlors and manufacturers in the city of Toronto. Oh and I went there last Friday!

The shop is called Maple Leaf Dairy Ice Cream Parlor or as it’s locally known St. Clair Ice Cream. They have a good variety of flavors of ice cream, sherberts and frozen yogurts. I just always get ice cream when I go there, but my husband tried the frozen yogurt this last visit.

Yes, I said this last visit. We went to the ice cream shop on Friday. My husband had left me sitting in a hot car waiting for him for a half hour and when he finally came back I was mad and I’d decided that I wanted to cool down and I wanted ice cream. So … off to Maple Leaf Dairy we went.

As I said above I’m a chocoholic … so I decided to try the Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream. Chris tried the Raspberry Frozen Yogurt. Each of our cones were “Single Scoop” servings in a waffle cone. Get a load of what they think is a single scoop …

2 HUGE single scoop cones from the Maple Leaf Dairy Ice Cream Parlor Toronto

This is actually the second time this year that I went to this ice cream parlor – and only the second time I’ve had ice cream this year. The last time I mistakenly asked for a double scoop and you wouldn’t believe how big that was! These single scoops alone are huge. Chris was already digging into his when I decided to take the picture that’s why his Raspberry one is a little smaller than my Chocolate fudge brownie one.

Oh and they were only about $3.50 or so each. I think that’s a pretty good price for the amount of ice cream and or frozen yogurt we got. I was full for hours. We didn’t have dinner that night until quite late.

If you’re in Toronto’s East end and have a craving for ice cream go to 2861 Danforth Ave. and Kelvin Ave. and you won’t be disappointed. Bring your appetite!

Looks like the weather is getting better

May 8, 2012 by Tricia

The weather is getting nicer. Finally! April was cool here in Toronto. That probably wouldn’t have been that bad, but when April turns out to be cooler than March and has snow when March didn’t .. well .. I’m happy that May has arrived. So are my plants! My garden is looking lovely.

The other day is was nice enough out that I spent some time working in my front yard. I was weeding the garden beds and fixing up the look of the front boulevard. I have a planted boulevard, but crab grass was starting to grow in the flower beds there so I spent a lot of time pulling it out. Hopefully it doesn’t grow back.

Everyone was enjoying the nice day when I was working in the garden. Lots of neighbors were outside either working on their own yards – cutting the grass etc, or out walking around. I said hello to a lot of people as I worked on my garden. One of the people that passed me was wearing one of those funny t shirts that made me laugh out loud .. but I can’t repeat what it said on here .. it was bad! I just about fell over into a bush when I saw it!

My front yard looks great. Now all I have to do is work on the back yard! The back yard isn’t that big, but compared to my front yard it’s a lot bigger – it will take longer to tidy up. Perhaps this weekend if the weather is nice. How is your yard and garden?
