Our cable has sick signal syndrome

November 7, 2006 by Tricia

Yes, our cable – you know the stuff that brings in television stations, the internet and sometimes even internet telephone – is sick. I’m so sad.

The cable guy came over today. He arrived at about 12 noon. Right away he knew that we had a serious problem. The signal was very very weak … and our channels … *sob* were about to go to digital heaven.

The surgeon technician had arrived just in time. He continued to monitor the signal but it continued to be weak. There was a signal in but no signal out – it was … dying. We had sick signal syndrome. Outside he went and he got to work installing a new pacemaker cable box.

It was touch and go for a while. We thought we were going to lose the patient signal all together. Then, the worst happened. My cable modem red lined! No internet connection at all. The doctor technician went back to the pacemaker cable box and discovered there was a corroded cable connection outside. The wire was replaced.

Finally after three hours, the signal grew stronger and the internet came back online. Our system is still very weak, and needs medicine a service call to the area to fix the service trunk to strengthen the overall signal.

As long as the pacemaker whatever he did keeps working we’ll be online and be able to watch and record our favorite shows on the PVR, and then once the medicine kicks in service call is complete we should be out of the woods and back to normal again.

If by chance I disappear for a while, well you’ll know that the pacemaker cable guys work failed. We’ll be back after the transplant service is restored.

Cross your fingers that everything keeps working!

My sister liked my photos!

November 6, 2006 by Tricia

I spent some time talking on the phone with my sister on Saturday night. We live in the same city but we don’t really get together or talk all that often. She has her own business and she’s often busy and me – well I’m often not feeling that great, so I guess that’s why we don’t see each other much lately.

Anyway she’s off to Mexico! Lucky girl. A week away from home just as it’s getting cold here. I’m envious.

While we were talking I told her about my photoblog and sent her a few links to some of the shots on the site that I’m particularly happy with. I was very pleased when she told me that she really liked the photos.

I’m not just pleased because she liked them. I’m pleased because she’s an Artist and she liked them. She hasn’t been doing her own art work for a number of years now- partly due to having twins and her own business and lately she hasn’t been able to do any painting because she suffered a brain injury in 2004 as a result of a surgical operation she had to have done. She’s much better now but she lost a lot of her fine muscle control with the brain injury and she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to paint again.

During our conversation I was trying to encourage her to use her artist eye in photography. I’m sure she’d be a great photographer. It was through this part of the conversation that I mentioned my photoblog.

Now we have plans to go to some of the Funky areas of Toronto and take some photos together when she gets back from her vacation. I think we’ll have a lot of fun.

Shreddy the Doberman Sheppard

November 4, 2006 by Tricia

I was just speaking with my sister and she’s off for another holiday! I’m green with envy. I need that holiday too.

Any way, this reminded me of how my husband and I used to take care of one of her dogs when she’d go on a family vacation every winter years ago. She had this dog called Shreddy. Shreddy was a German Sheppard Doberman mix. She was bigger than most Shepard’s but she had long hair rather than the short hair both of her parents had. Shreddy looked like a big fluff ball. LOL

My husband was always afraid of her. Well he’s afraid of all dogs. Shreddy loved to sit at his feet in our apartment. He’d lean over and pet her and every time he’d stop she’d growl. One day he called out to me sounding quite afraid “I’m tired of petting her but she keeps staring at me and growling every time I stop!”. I had to explain to him that she wasn’t really growling – she was begging for more. It took a while for Chris to get over his fear of her even after he understood that she was just sitting with him because she loved being pet.

Remember I mentioned her long hair? Well every summer my sister and her husband took Shreddy to the dog grooming salon to have her fur pretty much shaved off. She’d get way too hot in the summer without the haircut otherwise. She looked so funny with her hair shaved off. The short hair was gray instead of being the black and white shades that it had been when it was longer. It also made her look more like a puppy.

After she’d get her hair cut she’d hide for a couple of days. She knew she looked different. Once she got used to her new look though she’d have a burst of energy. Maybe that contributed to us thinking she looked more like a puppy when her hair was shorn off.

Shreddy is no longer around and I miss her. One of our neighbors has a dog that looks a lot like she did and I always think of Shreddy and what a great dog she was when I see our neighbors dog.

I could get addicted to these videos

November 3, 2006 by Tricia

As you’ve probably noticed I’ve made a few videos of my own that I’ve posted to the site lately – well Wednesday and Thursday. Did you see them? If you didn’t you should check out my turtle race video – you can see my turtles and hear my voice if you do. Sorry I didn’t make an appearance in that one. Maybe next time. Maybe.

‘ve been using my digital camera to make the videos. It’s really easy. I just make the video, upload it onto my computer, then I open up Windows movie maker import the video into it, do a bit of editing and ta da! I can upload it to youtube for all to see. I can’t do this as easily with any videos that I’ve made with my cellphone. It saves the videos into a format with the extension 3gp. Windows Movie maker doesn’t accept that file type. I have to use another program to convert it to avi first. It’s a pain in the ass.

This is opening up new possibilities for me know that I know how easy it is to make videos. Stay tuned you might start to see some crazy stuff here. LOL

Oh and if anyone knows of any easy to use programs that convert 3gp video to avi or mpeg I’d love to hear about it. Thanks.

How was your Halloween?

November 1, 2006 by Tricia

Here I am talking about Halloween and you’re probably sick of it or over it already. Am I right? If your American you’re probably already thinking of Thanksgiving. Uh huh. Well I’m just asking. LOL

I was a total party pooper this Halloween. Usually we decorate the outside of our house and even our front yard. We’ve got a Ghost, a scary skeleton in a reaper gown that shakes and moans when something moves in front of it. Cobweb making stuff galore. A scarecrow (for autumn) with bales of hay (4) and all kind of other Halloween related decorations that we put up. We even bought two pumpkins to carve and put out too.

But did I decorate? Nope. My husband had to work Halloween evening and since I haven’t been feeling all that well I decided that I wasn’t into entertaining the hundreds of kids that usually come by. We’re also a little low on funds too, so when I thought about how much all that candy costs I nixed the whole plan.

Next year we’ll do a super Halloween event. Usually we dress up and really get into it. I think we do a good job so that’s why we end up with so many kids dropping by. Next year.

So what did you do for Halloween? Did you decorate your home and entertain the kiddies? Did you go to a party? or maybe you just stayed in like I ended up doing?
