Newgie- News and Articles at your fingertips

November 1, 2006 by Tricia

I found another site that my readers might like. If you like staying on top of the news or have very specific interests you can visit Newgie.com and get all your news and stories in one place.

I signed up for a site- which is rather easy to do by the way – and started exploring. From what I can tell so far, the site ranks stories based on the interest that other users have shown. For example, one of the first stories that was shown in my account area was a story about one of Paypals windows being broken by an explosive device. I imagine that a lot of other users looked at that news story before I got there and that’s why it was first in my section.

Newgie seems to be very easy to use. You can navigate in two major ways. You can go to your MyNewgie page and if you’ve already set up your preferences all the stories from the topics and categories that you selected will be there for you to browse through. Otherwise, you can click on your My account page and set up your preferences there, see the stories that you’ve viewed most recently, and manage your categories, RSS feeds and communities.

I found it very easy to get started selecting categories that I might be interested in. You can do this from your Account page. Simply scroll down to categories then click on “Manage my categories” from there you can see which ones you’ve subscribed to already or add more categories. Once you’ve selected the types of categories that you like you can adjust the options for each one- such as how many articles it will show you, their rank, and whether it will show you the full article or just a summary to begin with.

When you are reading an article you can add it as a favorite, recommend it for other Newgies, or Discuss it. You can do all of that by hovering over the news story in your Newgie area. If you choose to discuss the article you can add a comment to it, or send it to one of the communities that you’ve subscribed to.

I’d need to spend a few days visiting the site before I could figure out all of the pros and cons but from what I can see so far it appears to be easy to use, and it’s full of great news stories and other information.

The only thing that I couldn’t find is a search function. I’d love to be able to type in something like “photography” and get articles or stories that have something to do with my search term.

This is my ride

November 1, 2006 by Tricia

Have you heard of Pinks? It has apparently become the most watched weekly series on SPEED. Pinks has been called “the hottest car show on Television” with over 2 million visitors each week.

Pinks sets up Drag Racing matches in the setting of a 1950’s drag race. Contestants drag race to win the best 3 out of 5 races. The loser gets the “pink” slip. They’re casting for season four of the program now – so if you’d like to find out if you are the best drag racer in a competition go to the site and sign up. Maybe they’ll pick you for an episode.

If you love watching drag racing check out the Pinks Marathon on www.speedtv.com Nov 23, 2006. I haven’t seen the show yet but it sounds like an interesting concept. If you are a drag racing fan you should check it out.

Here’s my ride. Sorry it’s a bit dark, I took the video at 5 p.m. and it starts to get dark here at that time.

Yeah, it’s just a Ford Contour with major muffler and manifold problems. It’s not all that fast but with the muffler problem it certainly sounds like a drag racing car.

Here’s another video featuring our Contour. Chris and I got to drive on the Molson Indy race track here in Toronto when they were setting it up. This video isn’t very good because I took it with my new cell phone and then mucked up the editing. But you’ll get the idea if you watch it. Oh and I sound like I’m snapping at Chris at the beginning of the video- I wasn’t. He’d just told me to turn the camera on and I already had, my voice sounds loud and tinny since it was so close to the microphone around that time.

If I didn’t have to work

October 31, 2006 by Tricia

Have you ever thought about what you would do with your days if you didn’t have to work? Now who am I to ask that seeing as I’m not actually working these days huh? That’s not by choice though, and not because I’m lucky enough to not have to work. Nope, unfortunately I’ve had to take an extended leave of absence due to illness.

But if I didn’t have to work … either because I won or inherited a lot of money or perhaps was born wealthy, let see, what would I do instead?

I’d like to think that I would do something good with my life like try to help underprivileged youth in my city, or perhaps go to a Third World Country and start an education program for the people and teach them how to be self sustaining as well as providing them with the materials to get themselves started.

I’d start more city “Grow your own food” programs by securing land that people could use to plant gardens and grow their own vegetables and fruit, and I’d teach people how to do that well.

I’d also indulge in my passion for photography and try to develop it into a real talent, and donate my world renowned photographs to the National Geographic. LOL

That’s what good Trish would do, but there’s a bad Trish here too. One that can be very self indulgent at times.

Bad Trish would probably go to College or University meaning to take a course that would help her achieve good Trish’s goals, but she’d end up partying every night and not going to all of her classes. She’d probably only attend the afternoon classes since she’d be up so late the night before that she wouldn’t be able to get up for class anyway.

Once Bad Trish gave up on University or flunked out she’d end up spending time in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, Los Vegas, London and Paris at the hottest parties, fashion shows and red carpet events. She’d probably end up in the tabloids at least once a week. I’m sure bad Trish would be a Paris Hilton type character – except she’d be smarter and have a little more class.

Perhaps bad Trish would mellow as she aged and become a nicer person donating to charity or appearing at fund raisers for worthy causes, but she’d probably always be a bit of a “me first” person I’m afraid.

Now it’s your turn. If you had more than enough money to life on and do anything you wanted to do in life what would you do? Everyone has a selfish side – would you treat the selfish you, or would you try to bring out the best in yourself by being a wonderful person with your deeds?

Hugh Laurie SNL

October 30, 2006 by Tricia

Hugh Laurie was on Saturday night live the other night. OMG he’s hilarious! Did anyone see SNL this past weekend?

I know that a lot of my readers like Hugh Laurie on House. It was very interesting for me to see him do comedy and sing. Yes he sang and quite well too if I say so myself. Of course his singing sketch was a comedy – he was signing a real song but messing up the words. In another sketch he was dressed as a woman. Take it from me he’s much more attractive as a man.

I went looking on YouTube.com to see if anyone had uploaded any scenes from his SNL performance but I haven’t found any so far. I did find one of him on Friends though. Do you remember Hugh Laurie’s appearance in Friends? I didn’t. See it for yourself.
