How To Get Beautiful Engagement Photos

January 3, 2013 by Trish

You’re the bride to be so let’s be real—engagement photos are all about you! Many photographers will actually provide stylists to do your hair and makeup for you for the photo session.  Don’t get worried by all the reviews online about Glamour Shots rip-offs, the result of the photo session will be pictures that you cherish forever.

Tip #1: Bring multiple outfits

It’s always great to have more than one option for photo shoot outfits. Pick clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident to get the best, most natural looking poses. Vivid colors or neutrals work well—solid colors will bring more attention to your face compared to busy prints. Don’t forget to think about your outfit, accessories, and shoes from head to toe for full body shots.

Tip #2: Come ready for hair and makeup

Getting ready for your own personal glamour treatment is a piece of cake—simply come as you are! Arrive at your session with fresh, clean hair and little to no makeup. The pros will take care of styling your hair and applying your makeup so you can focus all of your energy on feeling fabulous and enjoying your special engagement shoot.

Tip #3: Speak your mind

Yes, you’re going to an expert to get some great photos done, but even the best photographer isn’t going to read your mind. Communicate your ideas, interests, likes, and dislikes to your photographer throughout the day. Express yourself to have a fun and successful photo shoot!

Tip #4: Bring your own props

Great photographers will have some creative ideas for your engagement photos, but it’s up to you and your significant other to make them even more personalized and totally you. Bringing prop items is a great way to customize your photos together: sporting goods, musical instruments, even pets can work if they are a great representation of you and your hubby to be.

Tip #5: Have fun!

You’ll look every inch the glamour queen you are if you can relax and have a good time during your photo session. Take a deep breath, snuggle up to your honey, and smile! Your pictures will be just the first step to a lifetime of great memories with your special someone, so live in the moment and enjoy!

Glamour shots are a fun way to treat yourself and a great way to capture memories with the love of your life. Use the tips mentioned above to get some great photos and have a fun special day before the big day.

5 Quick Tips for Creative Photographs of Children

December 13, 2012 by Trish

As cliché as it may sound, we often hear the phrases, “they are only little once,” and “a picture is worth 1,000 words.” Since this is the case, you will want to ensure to take plenty of pictures of your baby, so you can look back and cherish the memories for the rest of your life. However, you do not want to make the mistake that most people do, which is to have a bunch of pictures that look practically identical with the exception of the child being a different age in each picture. We have done the research for you and came up with five quick tips for creative photographs of children.

Different Angles

First of all, you, nor anyone else you show the pictures to, wants to feel like they are looking at duplicate pictures with the exception of the child’s age and the clothes they are wearing. For this reason, you should try to vary the angles of your shoots. For instance, you could take some full-body portraits in some pictures, while you could have the angle looking up, down or from the side in others.

Zoom

In some pictures, you will want to capture your child with a cute background, such as in front of their playhouse or toys. However, there will be other times where you just want to focus in on your baby’s stunning eyes. You can accomplish either task by zooming in or out.

Caught Off-Guard

One thing that many parents have done in the past that they end up regretting is only having professional pictures or pictures they carefully choreographed taken. For this reason, we have found that your best bet is to catch your child off-guard when you take some of the pictures. If you see them making their infamous “pouty” face, quickly take their picture. In other words, you do not want to just have a bunch of pictures of them with a plain background and a cheesy smile on their face.

Bring it to Life

Another mistake many people have made is to take a bunch of generic-looking pictures of their kids. Instead, you should bring the photographs to life by using various special effects and angles as aforementioned. However, if you want the maximum effect, you should try to catch them when they are crawling around for the first time or playing with their favorite toys.

Lighting

Finally, you do not want every picture to have the same lighting. You can change up the lighting a bit by taking some pictures indoors and others outside. Additionally, you can create homemade backgrounds, such as using their favorite blanket, to make the photographs even more personal.

While your baby may keep you up all night and flat out wear you out, you should cherish these years because they are only young once. However, you are only capable of remembering so much about your child’s baby years, so you will really regret it if you do not have a wide variety of their baby pictures.

The tree that fell on our house, lawn and car!

September 21, 2011 by Tricia

I don’t think I mentioned it on this blog, but back in August a huge storm came up suddenly and we were left with damage to our house and car.

It was a Sunday afternoon – August 21st, and my husband was out shopping. I noticed the skies had darkened to that sickly stormy green that you see before a tornado touches down. I stepped out onto our enclosed front porch hoping that my husband had come home because I had a feeling the storm was going to be bad. Just then, the rain started coming down violently. I tried closing the windows of our enclosed porch as the rain rushed in and as I did I saw our car trying to pull into the driveway.

Shortly after my husband pulled into our driveway I thought about running outside to help him bring in the groceries that he’d just purchased, but just then there was a crash on the house, and then the roof on the enclosed porch and then all I could see were branches covering my whole small lawn, walkway and our car!

Did my husband make it out of the car? Was he still inside?

I couldn’t hear anything. The rain was crashing down so hard and I could barely see out the windows. I tried going back inside the house and I saw the power was out. Then, I tried to get out of the house and the front door was blocked by tree branches so I couldn’t get out.

For a few minutes I didn’t know if my husband was still in the car and if he was ok or not. Then as the rain started to die down I saw my husband get out of the car. When he made it to me he told me that he’d been trying to call me with the cellphone, but of course the power was off inside the house so our cordless phone wasn’t working. I had however pounded on the wall and managed to alert our next door neighbor and he came out to see what was going on and man was he surprised to see that a huge branch from his city tree had fallen on our houses!’

Funny how things happen – about half an hour before the storm I had noticed the neighbors that we share our driveway with arrive and it looked like they were going to park in the driveway but they didn’t. If they had it would have been there car that had been hit by the huge branch. Of course our car only had a few little scratches on it – the main damage was to our house and our other neighbors evestroughs when the huge branch came crashing down and oh … to some of my roses too. What I was going to say though was that if I had run out of the porch to help my husband with the groceries or if my husband had gotten out of the car immediately upon arriving home either of use could have been hit by that branch – so yeah – it’s funny how things happen, thee things averted I suppose you could say.

The branch that fell on our walkway, garden bed, lawn and car was over twenty feet in length and I estimate – especially after we cut it up! – that it weighed over 500 pounds, perhaps substantially more.

Anyway this post is getting long! We called our insurance company to let them know what happened, but we didn’t make a claim. We were told that there was a good chance that because it was a city tree that we could make a claim against the city. Uh huh. Well the power was out for about 7 hours that day and it took me until close to ten in the evening to get in touch with Toronto’s city information number 311 where I got a reference number for my claim and also informed the city that I needed an “urban forestry” cleanup ie all that wood on my lawn!

My semi-detached house neighbor and I both put in claims with the city about the damage to our houses from the city tree. Unfortunately I just found out last week that the city turned down our claim because it was a storm – ie caused by nature so they aren’t to blame. I’m pretty sure our neighbor got the same answer so I guess we’ll have to get together and either compare insurance quotes or just equally chip in for repairs to our evestroughs. We definitely need to fix them before winter!

Our dog could live at the beach – no problem!

April 20, 2010 by Tricia

I’ve been really lazy about posting the pictures that I’ve taken lately. I mean really lazy!

I’ve had some pictures on my computer that date back to October that I hadn’t cropped or done anything with, let alone uploaded to my Flickr account!

If you’re a regular reader or if you’ve browsed through my blog you already know that I like to take pictures of my garden, my dog and events that I go to here in Toronto and elsewhere. I often post them when when I blog.

Anyway, I spent some time on the weekend working on my photos and uploaded some of the backlog to my Flickr account. Now they’re ready for posting. Of course I still have to go through my most recent photos ie the ones I’ve taken since my garden started coming back to life in March and get them ready for posting too.

Maybe I’ll spend some time doing that this week or on the weekend. Speaking of the weekend … I think we’re going to have to cut our grass this weekend! I don’t think we’ve ever cut our grass as early as April before! But it’s been green since March and it’s really growing now.

While we’re at it I think it’s about time we put out our patio furniture too! The weathers been beautiful so we might as well get our table and chairs out so that we can enjoy the garden and the beautiful weather in comfort.

Would you like to see some of the pictures that I’ve been holding on to for a while and not posting? Ok, well here’s a few of my beautiful Labrador Retriever Midnight at the beach and lounging at home.

Can you believe that on March 7th we had a day that reached 19 Celsius (66 F)? Yeah, here in Toronto! I know that probably doesn’t sound that warm to those of you who live in warm climates but that’s downright hot for the “Great White North” in March. LOL Well, my brother was visiting from Vancouver and we decided to get outside and enjoy the day so that’s how we ended up taking our dog to Cherry beach.

Here’s a shot of here in action trying to fetch a stick as it lands in the water:

Our lab chasing a stick into the water

Another action shot as our Lab, Midnight, races into the cold waters of Lake Ontario:

Midnight finally coming back to shore. She’d whine for us to throw a stick or even a rock into the water for her to fetch:

Our Lab coming out of the water splish splash

And here’s a picture of Midnight playing with some of her new doggy friends on the beach:

Those Rottweilers were twice as big as here but she got along with them great.

Finally here’s a shot of Midnight in one of my favorite poses. I call it here “My feet smell terrific” position. LOL Does your dog sniff (and chew) it’s own feet too?

Autumn blooms in my garden

Well it looks like Autumn is here and it won’t be long until winter arrives and the ground is covered in snow. I know … depressing isn’t it?

It’s been such a cold rainy summer and now fall that I’m not looking forward to winter at all! So I’ll look back on our fleeting summer and show you some of the beauties that will get me through winter …

This is a lovely small rose called Lavender Dreams.

It blooms regularly throughout summer, but it’s one of the few roses that I grow, that I think, looks best in the fall. It’s colours deepen and it’s beauty just shines through once the cool weather arrives:

I can’t say farewell to summer without showing you a photo of a true summer flower! I always grow sunflowers in the planted boulevard in front of my house. In fact that’s often how people visiting our house for the first time find it … we say just look for the sunflowers and you’ll find our house.

One rose that I know will keep blooming into December is “Bonica”. This pretty little rose is one of my best bloomers. it blooms from June through until it’s covered in snow. What a trooper!

Do you have a garden? Is it starting to shut down now that we’re well into Autumn? Are any of your flowers still blooming?
