Just 50 years old Bernie Mac dies suddenly

by Tricia

bernie_mac.jpg Sadly the world has lost another comedian. Bernie Mac passed away early this morning due to complications from pneumonia. He died in a Chicago area hospital.

Mac was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with pneumonia on August 1st said his rep in a statement. He’d been expected to recover however there had been rumors of the seriousness of his condition.

The comedian who has made people laugh for the last 30 years with rolls in film, television and routines in comedy clubs was only 50 years old.

Here’s some information about Bernie Macs long comedy career and how it all started courtesy of People Magazine Online:

Born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough in Chicago, Mac began his career as a stand-up comedian in the small comedy clubs of his native town. As a founding member of the Kings of Comedy comedy tour – the success of which spawned Spike Lee’s 2000 concert movie The Original Kings of Comedy (also starring Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer) – Mac was able to spotlight what would become his rapid-fire delivery. This effectively launched him into the big time.

The Bernie Mac Show, which ran from 2001 to 2006, often poked fun of Mac’s own life and proved a favorite of both critics and audiences – receiving a prestigious Peabody Award, as well as honors from the Television Critics Association (for best individual achievement in comedy).

In addition, the program provided a popular platform for Mac to win consecutive NAACP Image Awards for outstanding actor in a comedy series, from 2003 to 2006.

Named top actor in a comedy series at the ’06 ceremony, Mac clutched his trophy and reverted to his standup character, declaring: “America, I heard your prayers, and you wanted me here. The Mac Man cometh, and I’m bringing hell with me.”

Movie Roles
He scored on the big screen, too. Among his appearances were those in the comedy Guess Who (as Ashton Kutcher’s imposing, prospective father-in-law); the Ocean’s 11 franchise; Bad Santa; Charlie’s Angels; and Pride, costarring Terrence Howard.

This spring, Mac wrapped the upcoming film Soul Men, a comedy costarring Samuel L. Jackson about a former singing duo staging a comeback. He is also set to appear in Old Dogs with John Travolta, Robin Williams and Matt Dillon.

He also published a 2001 collection of comic riffs, I Ain’t Scared of You and a 2006 memoir, Maybe You Never Cry Again.

In February 2005, Mac, then 47, revealed that for the previous two decades he had suffered from sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in organs such as the lungs or lymph nodes. “It has not altered or limited my lifestyle,” he said at the time.

Since 1977, Mac was married to Rhonda McCullough, with whom he had a daughter, Je’Niece, born in 1978. A graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana (with a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters in mental health counseling), Je’Niece married in 2003 and also has a daughter, Jasmine. His family survives Mac.

Comedian George Carlin dead at 71

by Tricia

georgecarlin.jpg Counter-culture hero and famed comedian George Carlin died at approximately 6 pm Sunday of heart failure. He was only 71 years old.

Carlin had a long career, but he was probably best known for his anti-establishment stance and routines involving dirty words and drug related themes. It’s also well known that he had a history of drug abuse and dependency.

The comedian was admitted to St. John’s Heath Center in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoon for chest pains and he died a few hours later at approximately 6 pm.

Carlin achieved icon status for his 1970s routine, “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television.” His edgy material and use of some of those “dirty” words on the radio sparked a 1978 FCC lawsuit. The court ruled in the government’s favor, charging Carlin with indecency and allowing regulators to ban the use of certain words on the radio when they thought children might be listening.

Carlin is survived by his wife Sally Wade and daughter Kelly Carlin McCall.

Tatum O’Neal busted for buying cocaine

by Tricia

tatum.jpgDid you hear that Tatum O’Neal was busted on Sunday for allegedly buying cocaine near her New York home?

O’Neal, 44, was seen making an illicit purchase at about 7:30 pm Sunday evening on Clinton Street. She was then arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. This, BTW, is a misdemeanor.

The alleged drug dealer, Allen Garcia, 32, was also arrested and charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Tatum was booked in the 7th precinct and was then arraigned and released on her own recognizance early Monday afternoon. She’s due to return to court on July 28th.

According to the New York Post O’Neal asked police “You know who I am, right?” and also claimed that she was “researching a part – I’m doing this for a part as a junkie.”

Tatum O’Neal, daughter of actor Ryan O’Neal has a history with drugs. She apparently began using drugs by the age of 14. Drugs of choice included Quaalude’s, cocaine, marijuana and heroin. She also wrote about her struggles with addiction in the 2004 memoir, A Paper Life.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight Tatum stated that she’s spoken with her three children – Kevin, 22, Sean, 20 and Emily, 17 and that they’ve been very supportive.

Finally found a theme for this site that I like

by Tricia

Well I’m back to trying to change the theme for this website. Again. I hated the theme that I used for most of the last year. It didn’t work properly in some browsers and was finicky.

I think I’ve found a theme with some great features for a Celebrity gossip related blog so I’m working on getting this theme set up for this blog. I’m changing background colors and links etc so you might notice some changes over the next hour or so if you’re reading a few posts.

Be patient and we’ll be back in business with a great new look shortly!

Richie Sambora might be charged with child endangerment

by Tricia

You might have heard that Richie Sambora was arrested on a DUI charge on March 25th? He’d quit drinking for some time but had apparently taken a few drinks that afternoon.

Well, police have now recommended that prosecutors charge him with child endangerment as he was driving with his daughter at the time of his arrest.

He hasn’t been formerly charged as of yet, but if he is charged a jail sentence is likely. He might be able to plea to a lesser offense such as going to rehab instead of jail.

Over the weekend Sambora was spotted in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. He was only seen drinking water.

A tentative arraignment date is set for May 7th.
