James Brown Memorial

by Tricia

James Brown A public service for the late Godfather of Soul will be held today at the Apollo Theater in New York City. James Brown died suddenly in the early hours of Monday morning after being admitted to the Emory Crawford Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He’d been diagnosed with pneumonia, but Heart Failure is the reported cause of death. Brown was 73 years old, and he’s survived by his partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, who was one of his back-up singers, and at least four children.

James Brown’s fans are pouring into New York city to say their final farewell to the music great. His body will be on view for the public at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. It’s been reported that a private ceremony will be held in Augusta GA on Friday, and then on Saturday, fans will be able to honor the music legend at a public funeral, to be officiated by Reverend Al Sharpton, that’s slated to be held at the James Brown Arena in Augusta.

BET Networks chairman and CEO Debra Lee said “We have lost the most inspirational force the music world has ever known, James Brown’s impact across all genres of music — especially funk, soul, disco and rock — is immeasurable, and will never be duplicated. He was one of the few individuals who truly merited recognition as an American legend. Without question, today’s musical artists worldwide owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to James Brown for his influence on lyrics, dance and stage presence.”

Brown first came to the publics attention with his 1956 single “Please, Please, Please” which quickly hit the R&B charts. He later went on to record such well known classics as “Out of Sight,” “(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Say It Loud — I’m Black and I’m Proud.”

Brown was honored with a lifetime achievment Grammy in 1992, and he was one of the first performers ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He also won two Grammys. One in 1965 for “Papa’s got a brand new bag” and the second in 1987 for “Living in America”.

Michael Jackson was quoted as saying in 2003 when James Brown was being Honored at the BET awards, “Nobody has influenced me more than James Brown, At 6 years old, he was the one I looked up to more than any other entertainer.” It’s also said that Eddie Murphy’s role as James Thunder Early in Dreamgirls was inspired by Brown.

Evangeline Lilly’s home burns

by Tricia

Evangeline Lilly Evangeline Lilly’s Home in Hawaii was gutted by fire early this past Wednesday morning. Lilly and her two roommates weren’t home at the time of the blaze. According to the Honolulu Fire department the cause of the fire is under investigation. Lilly had been living in this rental home for the last two years, ever since she was hired to work on Lost.

Apparently, Evangeline was filming on Waialua Beach, this was the last shoot prior to Christmas vacation, when the fire began. Her roommates, both crew members on Lost, we not home at the time of the fire either.

Neighbors called the fire department at 6:45 a.m. after they heard loud popping noises and realized the house was on fire. By the time the firefighters arrived the home was engulfed in flames. Several of the neighbors had pulled out their garden hoses to try to contain the fire just prior to the firefighters arrival.

The fire department was able to put the fire out within 20 minutes, but they weren’t able to enter the home immediately because the windows had bars on them and they couldn’t get into the house.

Lilly was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this month for Best Actress in a Drama. The awards will be held on January 15th. Lost will finally return to TV on February 7th.

Lilly had planned to return home to British Columbia Canada for the Holidays, but there’s no word yet as to whether she’s canceled her plans due to the fire.

This race is for the dogs

by Tricia

Britney Spears voted worst dog owner 2006 Who comes up with these things?

Apparently Oprah Winfrey is top dawg when it comes to caring for her pets, where as Britney Spears is the worlds worst dog owner according to an online vote by readers of The New York Dog and The Hollywood Dog magazines.

”She once had three Chihuahuas . . . and never left home without at least one of them on her arm,” the magazines’ editor said. “As soon as she met K-Fed and had kids they [the dogs] disappeared.”

Paris Hilton hasn’t improved much. She was last years “worst” winner, and this year she moved up to second worst for “treating her dogs like accessories.”

Winfrey, the owner of five dogs, was voted this year’s best celebrity dog owner. The talk-show host replaced 2005 winner Joss Stone, and beat off competition from Tori Spelling and Nicollette Sheridan.
