Screen legend dead at 83

by Tricia

1967 ... Paul Newman

I was saddened to learn that early this morning actor and screen legend, Paul Newman, died in his farmhouse near Westport Conn.. He was 83.

The actor, who’d had a long battle with cancer, died surrounded by his family and close friends.

Newman’s long career on the stage, screen and television included nine Oscar nominations and a win for The Color of Money. He truly was one of his generations greatest leading men. Newman remained in demand as an actor from the 1950’s through the 2000’s. His final on screen role was as a conflicted mob boss in Road to Perdition.

In later years his interests turned to philanthropy and racing cars.

Here’s a brief bio of his life and acting career from TVguide.com

Newman was born in 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up as the son of a successful sporting goods store owner in Shaker Heights. He acted in grade school and high school plays, then joined the Navy, serving in the Pacific in World War II. After his discharge he enrolled at Kenyon College, then spent a year at the Yale Drama School. He finally headed to New York, where he attended the famed New York Actors Studio.

He married his first wife, Jackie, in 1950. They had three children — Scott, Susan and Stephanie — before divorcing in 1958. In the same year Newman met and fell in love with his future wife, Joanne Woodward, when they filmed the The Long, Hot Summer. They married in Las Vegas, and went on to have three daughters, Elinor, Melissa and Claire.

The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January. He was often asked how a Hollywood marriage could persevere so successfully.

“I have steak at home,” he once explained. “Why should I go out for hamburger?”

In the decade after his marriage he made some of the most important films of his career. Newman’s rebels meshed perfectly with the mood of the 1960s, when he made such box office and critical hits such as The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

In 1968 he directed his first feature, Rachel, Rachel. The film earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination and a Best Actress nomination for Woodward.

After his only son, Scott, died of an accidental overdose in 1978, Newman started the Scott Newman Center for drug abuse prevention. He later started The Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, an organization for terminally ill children that took its name from Butch Cassidy.

Perhaps the most recognizable effort by the Newman clan is their food company Newman’s Own, which produces all-natural food, with proceeds going to charity.

An avid and passionate race car driver, he became co-owner of Newman-Haas racing in 1982.

He earned his Academy Award for his portrayal of The Hustler’s Fast Eddie Felson, now middle-aged, in The Color of Money.

After a public appearance in which Newman looked weak and gaunt, family friend A.E. Hotchner confirmed in June that Newman had a form of cancer, but said the actor was “dealing with it nicely.” More recent reports have said the actor decided to end treatments so he could die peacefully at home.

Britney regains temporary supervised custody

by Tricia

britney_spears180.jpg It looks like Britney Spears has regained visitation rights for her sons. On Saturday Spears was spotted driving around Studio City with her children Preston, 2 and Jayden James, 1.

It also appears that a court appointed monitor was sitting in the front seat beside Britney.

Britney’s visitation rights were temporarily suspended on Wednesday by L.A. Superior Court Commissioner. The judge had removed her rights after she was unreachable by a cell phone designated for court related scheduling.

The next custody related hearing is on October 26th. Spears and Federline are both expected to show up.

Spears and Federline are both required to show up for their next hearing on Oct. 26.

Britney Partying again

by Tricia

Britney’s back to her partying ways even though a judge has ordered that she have random drug testing.

Tuesday night Spears and Avril Lavigne were seen hitting the LA club scene. The singers were followed by a pack of paparazzi. Spears weas first spotted at Winstons with Lavigne, and then with friend Alli Sims.

The ladies left the club at about 1 am, but Spears was seen again later at the Hyde Lounge where she stayed until the club closed.

“They kept bringing (Spears) shots and so they were drinking,” says a Hyde observer. “She was dancing on the tables trying to be really sexy, even putting a black sock over her head as a hat, and putting on a show for everyone.”

Another observer saw what appeared to be alcohol in front of Spears but didn’t see her drink it.

Britney even drove to the police station at one point during the evening to complain about the paparazzi, but no action was taken.

The Judge in her custody fight with Federline found that she is “habitual, frequent and continuous” user of alcohol and controlled substances, and now must submit to random twice-weekly testing. Did this judgment tick her off and make her party more? Who knows?

Maybe she’s just getting the partying out of the way before she spends times with her kids again? Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon also ruled that both Spears and Federline may not consume alcohol or non-prescription controlled substances at least 12 hours prior to being with their children.

Sheen and Richards battling again

by Tricia

Did you hear that Denise Richards asked a judge to protect her children from ex-husband Charlie Sheen earlier today? The custody battle sure is heating up!

Sheen responded with a statement regarding Richards “behaves as though she owns our children. She does not. A day of legal reckoning for her is fast approaching.”

Richards Lawyer, Neal Raymond Hersh, made a statement “She believes that Charlie has significant personal issues which he has failed to address and which require her to take action to protect her children. This is not a vindictive action. Any responsible parent in Denise’s shoes would go to the ends of the Earth to protect her children.”

Papers obtained by Access Hollywood show that Richards has accused Sheen of “inappropriate behavior … and conduct,” including “his attraction to underage women and his sexual explicitness on the Internet, including revealing his private parts.” Richards seeks to stop Sheen’s overnight privileges with their daughters.

Sheen countered by releasing a statement: “Clearly the mother of my children has no interest in responsible co-parenting when it comes to my relationship with our girls. ”

He added: “The truth will prevail. It always does.”

Federline’s team is subpoena happy

by Tricia

Looks like things are heating up between Federline and Spears again. Kevin Federline’s defense team has delivered a subpoena to the rehab facility that Spears stayed in earlier this year. The subpoena was served early Saturday morning.

Kevins team is on a subpoena spree. They’ve served subpoenas to Spears bodyguard Daimon Shippen, former assistant Shannon Funk, and her friend Alli Sims. Who’s next?

“Kevin and his attorneys Mark Vincent Kaplan and James Simon are on a mission,” says the source. “They are pursuing all relevant evidence from every potential source and every available witness.”

It appears that Federline’s team wants to know how Spears responded to therapy at Promises. For instance they probably want to know if she was resistant to treatment or if she had a good attitude during her stay.

It’s presumed that the team is gathering information for an upcoming custody battle royale.
