2 injured, 4 dead is SC plane crash

by Tricia

Only hours after performing for thousands of South Carolina College students the Learjet that former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Celebrity DJ AM were traveling on went down in a fiery crash.

Four people were killed and two critically injured.

Travis Barker and DJ AM were transported to a burn center in Augusta, Ga about 75 miles southwest of Columbia and both are said to be in critical condition. Passengers, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, Calif., and Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles died, as did the pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31 of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and Co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsblad. Baker was an assistant to Barker and Still was a security guard for the musician.

The plane apparently departed just before midnight on Friday. Air traffic controllers reported seeing sparks as the plane took off. The plane hurtled off the end of the runway and crashed through antennas and a fence coming to rest on an embankment across a five-lane highway. The plane was quickly engulfed in flames.

At the crash site Saturday, the air was still heavy with the odor of jet fuel. A trail of black soot led off a runway. The nose of the aircraft was gone and the roof was missing from two-thirds of the charred plane.

“It’s absolutely terrible and tragic,” Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

Barker and Goldstein had performed together under the name TRVSDJ-AM at a free concert in Columbia on Friday night. Event sponsor T-Mobile said their hour long set ended at about 7:15 p.m.

The show, which included performances by former Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell and singer Gavin DeGraw, drew 10,000 people into the streets of Five Points, the neighborhood near the University of South Carolina, Coble said.

Peter Kastis, Farrell’s manager, said he and Farrell didn’t find out about the crash until they arrived at the airport Saturday morning to find it closed.

“I just hugged them hello less than 24 hours ago. I wish I could hug them now,” Kastis said.

Keith Urban has a back injury

by Tricia

keith_urban.jpg New dad Keith Urban has recently been diagnosed with a slipped disc in his back according to his publicist Paul Freundlich. There’s no word on what might have caused the injury (and in the case of backs sometimes it is unknown) but the injury apparently won’t affect his current touring schedule.

Keith himself mentioned his back problems to his fans at a concert in Konocti Harbor Resort and Spa in Kelseyville, CA on Saturday night.

Urban, 40, has been dividing his time between his North American tour dates and spending time in Australia with Nicile Kidman and their new baby daughter Sunday Rose. The baby is just 7 weeks old.

If you’re following Urbans tour dates he’s next set to perform at this weekends Country Rocks Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, after that he’ll be in New York City at Columbus Circle for the NFL’s kickoff show on September 5th.

Totally blown away by Feist – Juno Awards

by Tricia

I’m watching the Juno Awards – that’s Canada’s music awards which are our equivalent to the Grammy’s and Feist is taking a lot of awards.

The Juno’s are held over two days. There was a private dinner ceremony on Saturday night where the bulk of the awards were handed out. Feist pretty much took the big awards – Artist of the year and Song writer of the year.

Other than seeing her perform her song 1234 for the itunes/ ipod commercial on TV I’ve never really seen Feist perform.

I can’t say that anymore! She performed at the Juno’s and totally blew me away. In some ways she reminded me a little bit of Bjork but with a much more mainstream sound. I’d love to go to one of her concerts. I’m sure she’d be a performer worth seeing.

Avril Lavigne also performed at the Junos. She sang Girlfriend. Her backup dancers where sturdy looking girls. It a way it was nice to see more “every woman” type dancers highlighted in an area where usually only the thin and skeletal get to play.

Other big winners at the Juno’s were Finger Eleven for Rock Album of the Year – Them Vs. You Vs. Me.

Here’s the list of Saturday Nights winners. I’ll add the official Sunday night telecasts winners shortly.

Bobby Brown recovering from mild heart attack

by Tricia

bobby_brown.jpg Did you hear the news about Bobby Brown? He was hospitalized on Tuesday after having a mild heart attack.

His rep, Phaedra Parks, stated that he’s in great spirits and that he hopes to perform this weekend at the V100 Taste of Soul concert and festival in Los Angeles. Hello … he just had a heart attack. Cancel the gig!

Bobby is only 40 years old! I wonder if all the partying and drugs like coke caught up with him.

On Tuesday afternoon Brown began to feel chest pains and he was rushed to the hospital. By Wednesday morning he apparently “has a great prognosis from his doctors” said his rep. He was even expected to be released later that day.

Brown is still going through divorce and custody proceedings with Whitney Houston, 44. Their next court date is scheduled for October, 22nd.
