Top winners at the Oscars

Helen Mirren, Forest Whitaker and Martin Scorsese take top Oscar honors!

I don’t think many of the awards handed out will come as much of a surprise this year. There were so many great movies over the past year but some stood high above the crowd and it was clear that those movies and the actors that played in them would take home an Oscar Sunday evening.

Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker took home the top acting prizes of course. Mirren thanked the Academy for “biggest and the best gold star that I have ever had in my life”. Whitaker, who was visibly moved for his win as Ugandan dictator idi Amin in The last King of Scotland took the time to thank everyone from his ancestors to the people of Uganda.

Martin Scorsese, won a long awaited Oscar for best Director. This award was a long time in coming as he’d been nominated five times before but had lost each time. Upon accepting his award he said “I’m overwhelmed with this honor. … I just want to say too that so many people over the years have been wishing this for me. I go into a doctor’s office, an elevator … .” After thanking a long list of colleagues and family members, he gave a final shout-out to his 7-year-old daughter Francesca: “Jump up and down and make a lot of noise in the hotel. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Jennifer Hudson was overcome with emotion when she was called up to accept her award – “I have to just take this moment,” she told the crowd. “I cannot believe this. Look what God can do.”

She continued tearfully, “If my grandmother was here to see me now – she was my biggest inspiration for everything. She was a singer. She had the passion for it but she never had the chance. But I’m so grateful to have my mother here celebrating with me, my boyfriend, my sisters and my brothers. … Thank you all for being with me.”

One surprise at the show was that Eddie Murphy did not take home an award for Best supporting actor. Instead the the award was given to Alan Arkin for his role in Little Miss Sunshine which also won for best Orginal Screenplay. – “More than anything,” he said, “I am deeply moved by the openhearted appreciation our small film has received.” He also credited the offbeat comedy’s cast and crew “for creating the same sense of joy and trust and community that the film speaks about.”

Ellen DeGeneres, the host of the 79th Academy Awards, kept things moving along and kept the mood friendly.

Gore took the award for Best Documentary feature “An Inconvenient Truth” and in accepting his award he said “My fellow Americans, people all over the world,” then continued, “[global warming is] not a political issue. It’s a moral issue. We need to solve the problem.”

Best and worst Hair styles at the Golden Globes

by Tricia

reese_witherspoon2_300.jpg People.com has rated the stars for best and worst hair styles at the Golden Globes. They’ve given the lovely Reese Witherspoon top marks for her sleek straight hair style.

Bangs are back and you’ll notice that many of the stars have taken to them these days. Reeses bangs add a little flare to her hair style in this photo.

Other stars who’s hair made the grade were Naomi Watts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Salma Hayek, Sarah Paulson Sheryl Crow Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Hudson and Helen Mirren. I thought Felicity Huffman just looked lovely, her hair style framed her features beautifully and went well with the beautiful gown that she wore.

vanessa_williams300x400.jpg Vanessa Williams didn’t get off so luckily. She was rated as having one of the worst hair styles at the event. The Ugly Betty co-star attended the globes dressed in a Carmen Mar Valvo gown but her hair style just didn’t suit that great dress.

Jean Smart came to the awards in loose curls, but her hair looked straggly and in need of a good comb out. Ellen Pompeo’s hair was mentioned as being too much of an updo on People.com but I didn’t think it looked that bad. I would have liked to have seen her attend the awards with her hair down in loose waves.

I really hate to say this but the lovely Sienna Miller attended the awards looking like she’d just come from the gym. The braid wrapped around her head and loosely done up at the back is too casual a style for an awards ceremony in my opinion.

Sorry Sienna, of the photos I saw, you had the worst hair style of them all.

Blackwells worst dressed list for 2006 holds no surprises

by Tricia

spears_britneyexposed.jpg Honestly. The way some of the stars and “socialites” are dressing and behaving these days do we really need Mr. Blackwell to keep creating his Worst Dressed list every year?

I think it’s pretty obvious, even to those who don’t keep an eye on what the stars are up to who is the worst dressed of them all.

This year, in his 47th annual list, Blackwell chose not one but two people to head the top of his notorious list. Yes, you guessed it. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have been named Co-Worst Dressed stars of 2006. Not surprising at all since they also seem to have become BFF as well.

paris_hilton08.jpg Blackwell calls Spears and Hilton “two peas in an overexposed pod,” He adds that they are “style-free and fashion deprived…the ‘screamgirls’ have arrived!”

Blackwell, not only famous for his Worst dressed list, has spent more than three decades as a fashion designer.

Another victim of his list is Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles. Camilla was crowned second-worst dressed, calling her “the Duchess of Dowdy.” Ouch!

Number three ended up being Paris and Britney’s night clubbing friend Lindsay Lohan whom Blackwell proclaimed to be “tragically trapped in fashion’s fast lane…From adorable to deplorable.”

“La Diva Christina is a fabulous singer…but she puts good taste through the wardrobe wringer! All crass, no class.” Blackwell said of Christina Aquilera.

The nasty quips continued as Blackwell dubbed Mariah Carey a “Fashion Pariah” and the “Queen of Catastrophic Kitsch”, and Paula Abdul who favored floral patterns last year, had her clothing choices named “fiascos that grow moldier by the hour.”

Others to make the list were Sharon Stone of which he said “it’s clear Sharon’s misplaced her fashion gift—she looks like an over-the-hill Cruella De Ville—after a seismic shift!”

Tori Spelling is “all chills and no thrills—guess Tori’s ‘down and out in Beverly Hills!'” and Sandra Oh “drowning in beads, bangles and prehistoric bows, she’s layered lunacy—from toes to nose” made the list as well.

Meryl Streep was the last to be named, and of Streep Blackwell said “Her beauty-of-a-career cannot be denied, but that beast-of-a-wardrobe is pure mother of the bride.”

On the other side of the coin Blackwell was pleased with the fashion choices of Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie, Katie Holmes, Beyoncé, Marcia Cross, Heidi Klum, Helen Mirren and Barbra Streisand. He also added in Nancy Pelosi and Princess Charlotte of Monacofor good measure.
