Bollywood hits Toronto

by Tricia

bollywoodtoronto.jpg The hottest Bollywood movie out of India, Guru, premiered Thursday night in Toronto, Canada. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, the stars of the film, and the new Brad and Angelina of the Indian community.

Arpana Vora declared that the couple were “Absolutely gorgeous. Both of them. Just stunning!”, moments after the darling duo was whisked along the red carpet and into the screening.

Rai, who wore a white sari, and Bachchan, who donned a black suit and headband, were several hours late for the gala because of flight schedules and didn’t stop for questions. The delay built momentum at Toronto’s historic Elgin Theatre where the crowd of approximately 1,200 fans stood screaming on the sidewalk behind barriers for 6 hours. Yet another 1,200 filmgoers were already inside the theater.

The films producers chose Toronto for the premiere after receiving an impressive response for “Never Say Goodbye” which was another Bollywood film. That film had premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival this past September. The Gala crowd out numbered that for Brad Pitts film Babel.

“The South Asian community is very important to our city and so is the film industry. Bollywood brings them together,” said Mayor David Miller as he walked into the screening.

Producer Bobby Bedi (“Bandit Queen,” “Fire”) said at the premiere he chose Toronto for his premiere because it “by far is one most cosmopolitan city in the world.”

“Guru” is loosely based on the life of a young man who rose from poverty in a small Indian village in the 1950s to defy the odds and become a major textile merchant. In the film version, the character of Gurukant Desai (Bachchan) employs unethical methods to achieve his materialistic goals but does what he has to do to crack a market firmly controlled by the rich and privileged.

Rai – who has been described as giving Halle Berry strong competition for the unofficial title of most beautiful woman in the world – plays his wife Sujatha.

“She was stunning. Stunning. Very beautiful,” said Adesh Vora after he caught a glimpse of Rai. Looking at his wife though, he hesitated to concur that Rai is the most beautiful woman on Earth.

“My wife is number one,” he said.

How’d they lose the weight?

by Tricia

TvGuide online has written up an article that details how the contestants on the Biggest losers lost all that weight. Here’s some timely and hopefully helpful tips from the contestants themselves.

Amy Hildreth who lost 106 pounds says that she eats five or six small meals a day. I know for a fact that this is a good way to keep your metabolism revving. “You have to eat to lose.” “That was something that I never quite wrapped my head around before,” she says. “I thought when you’re hungry that means you’re losing weight. But that’s not the case. You need to keep your body fueled to continually lose and to have the energy to work out and perpetuate the cycle.”

Jaron Tate who lost 160 pounds says “Know how many calories your body needs and how many calories you’re actually stuffing into your mouth,” says Tate, who now eats 1,800 to 2,000 calories per day. “A quarter-pounder with cheese is 850 calories. A large apple [which weighs about the same] is 100. And if you’re having a salad, put salsa on it instead of ranch.” Two tablespoons of ranch dressing: 220 calories. Salsa: 20.

Ginnie Borque, lost 114 pounds says you should make a lot of changes in your life- “I do a lot of little things,” says Borque, one of the 36 Biggest Loser at Home dieters. “I don’t like coffee without sugar and cream, so I switched to tea. I started carrying water bottles wherever I go, traded cocktails for Diet Coke, and I fill up on broccoli instead of French fries. Oh, I also tried to make working out a social event. It’s a lot harder to skip a workout when you’ve scheduled it with a friend!”

Activity is important to Ken Coleman, who lost 161 pounds he says “Even now that the show’s over, I still work out six to seven days a week, three hours a day,” Coleman says. Of course, you don’t have to become a gym rat to slim down. But, as Coleman explains, you do need to increase your activity in as many ways as possible.

Mark Wiley, lost 129 pounds, says lose the excuses too- “‘Oh, I have back problems, work [to do] or I don’t have enough time.’ [Making] excuses: that’s what’s always held me back,” Wiley says. “If you’re short on time, do something to get your heart rate up. One morning I had a flight to catch, and I didn’t have time to go to the gym. So I ran the stairs in my building. It’s eight flights, and I did it about 20 times!”

Coupling carbs and protien helped Jennifer Eisenbarth, lost 100 pounds It’s one of the biggest lessons the plus-size model learned during her only week on the ranch. “Whenever you eat a carb, always eat a protein with it because protein helps your body process carbs more efficiently,” she says. “For example, “I love-love-love hummus. So I put it on egg whites.”

New York bid Fairwell to James Brown

by Tricia

James Brown On Thursday, thousands of fans lined up to pay their respects and bid farewell to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, at the Apollo Theater where the singer first made his mark 40 years ago.

Brown was 73 when he passed away early Christmas morning of congestive heart failure in Atlanta.

His body traveled on a horse-drawn carriage through New Yorks Harlem streets to the famous theater – The Apollo, on Thursday. “James Brown means everything to the black community,” said Brenda Baskin, 50, from Brooklyn, as she stood outside.

“Brown’s lyrics ‘Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud,’ opened up the doors for black people to have more pride,” she said. “He told his people to hold their heads up and that there was something for them to be prideful in — themselves.”

Browns body was taken back to his hometown of Augusta, Georgia after the New York viewing. A private service was to be held today, and an additional public viewing will be held on Saturday prior to Browns burial.

Brown was a Grammy Award winner who stood out as one of America’s greatest showmen and band leaders. His revolutionary mix of funky rhythms and staccato horns will not soon be forgotten.

The line to view James Brown’s body was the length of three city blocks. People slowly proceeding to the theater were given an inpromptu street performance by a Brown impersonator, while others sold T-Shirts and photos of Brown to those in the line.

“I came out for soul brother No. 1. That’s who he is — James ‘Butane’ Brown, the man who set the stage on fire,” said fan Fred Chinnery, 50, from New Rochelle, New York. “This man was the baddest man who ever put on a pair of dancing shoes and slid across the stage.”

Brown had been scheduled to perform in New Yorks Time square on New Years Eve. He had more than 119 singles on the charts and recorded over 50 albums, as well as performing live at events at least 100 times a year. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, and had received a lifetime Grammy achievement award.

James you will be missed.

James Brown Memorial

by Tricia

James Brown A public service for the late Godfather of Soul will be held today at the Apollo Theater in New York City. James Brown died suddenly in the early hours of Monday morning after being admitted to the Emory Crawford Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He’d been diagnosed with pneumonia, but Heart Failure is the reported cause of death. Brown was 73 years old, and he’s survived by his partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, who was one of his back-up singers, and at least four children.

James Brown’s fans are pouring into New York city to say their final farewell to the music great. His body will be on view for the public at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. It’s been reported that a private ceremony will be held in Augusta GA on Friday, and then on Saturday, fans will be able to honor the music legend at a public funeral, to be officiated by Reverend Al Sharpton, that’s slated to be held at the James Brown Arena in Augusta.

BET Networks chairman and CEO Debra Lee said “We have lost the most inspirational force the music world has ever known, James Brown’s impact across all genres of music — especially funk, soul, disco and rock — is immeasurable, and will never be duplicated. He was one of the few individuals who truly merited recognition as an American legend. Without question, today’s musical artists worldwide owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to James Brown for his influence on lyrics, dance and stage presence.”

Brown first came to the publics attention with his 1956 single “Please, Please, Please” which quickly hit the R&B charts. He later went on to record such well known classics as “Out of Sight,” “(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Say It Loud — I’m Black and I’m Proud.”

Brown was honored with a lifetime achievment Grammy in 1992, and he was one of the first performers ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He also won two Grammys. One in 1965 for “Papa’s got a brand new bag” and the second in 1987 for “Living in America”.

Michael Jackson was quoted as saying in 2003 when James Brown was being Honored at the BET awards, “Nobody has influenced me more than James Brown, At 6 years old, he was the one I looked up to more than any other entertainer.” It’s also said that Eddie Murphy’s role as James Thunder Early in Dreamgirls was inspired by Brown.

Meg Ryan to get chubby for film

by Tricia

Meg Ryan has signed on to wear a fat suit for a new role. She’ll team up with Antonio Banderas in romantic comedy Homeland Security, in which she’ll play a slimmed-down diva.

Ryan will start the film off as an “enormous” woman and she’ll join the ranks of Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts who have donned fat suits.

The actress says of her character, “She was enormous, and now she’s foxy, and so she’s free to just dig herself. She starts out at 250 pounds before she sheds all that extra weight.”

Ryan revealed that her new fat suit took three hours to apply, but the actress isn’t complaining: “I like a character who is all about transformation and is all about ‘yes’ to life, when it used to be ‘no’ to life.”

The role has given Ryan the chance to work with another member of the Hanks family – Tom Hanks’ son Colin will play her son in the film. Ryan and Hanks enjoyed box office success in three hit romantic comedies.
