Winter care for house plants and ornamentals

by Tricia

Did you receive any ornamental house plants over the holidays? How are they fairing in your home?

As you might know many of the potted plants that you might have received over the holiday season are not usually meant to be kept as permanent house plants. They’re raised in green houses and often don’t adapt well to the conditions within your home.

Many of them do not like being kept at high temperatures. If you want to prolong their life try to keep them in full sunlight, in rooms that are between 65 F and 72 F.

If you haven’t already removed the foil around the plants pot you should do that now The foil might be preventing the plant’s pot from draining properly and roots might stay too wet and die off.

If you have Amaryllis blooming in your home right now remember to cut the faded flowers. You don’t want seeds to form as that robs the bulb of energy that should be put toward next nears growth.

House plants with large leaves such as Philodendron, Dracaena, and rubber plant will benefit from a leave wash on occasion. Rinse with clear water or a damp clothe to remove dust and grime as this will keep the leaves pores open, and help keep your plant healthy.

If you want to reflect more light towards your houseplants you can line the window sills or shelves that the plants are sitting on with aluminum foil as it will reflect the light and provide a little bit of extra light for the houseplants.

If you live in an area with mild winters remember to check your window boxes and other outside containers that might have evergreen plants in them to see if they need watering.

The Million Dollar blog

by Tricia

As many of my readers, on this blog and the others that I write, know I’ve been very interested in finding ways to make money on my blogs and websites. It’s not just extra income for me. I only wish it were. No, I’m home sick because I can’t work my 12 hour nursing shifts in the ER because of my illness and since I’ve been off work for over a year I simply have no money coming in from my workplace. So, figuring out ways to make money from home has become an important goal for me.

That’s why I enjoy discovering sites such as the Million Dollar Blog, which is full of helpful posts geared towards teaching others how to make money on the internet.

I love the motto on the site “Making Money $0.10 at a time”. That is so true! You can’t expect to begin making money on your sites the very first day you add Google Adsense, Agloco, Amazon or other types of affiliate banners to your site. Nope, it really is 0.10 at a time. That’s what I’ve found anyway. Perhaps a blogger or webmaster who already has an extremely successful and popular website might make more right off the bat, but for most of us all those clicks and small earnings take some time to begin adding up to real earnings.

Mubminahmed.com’s Million Dollar blog has several different categories, each containing a number of useful and timely posts about various ways to make money on the internet. Read his article about making money via Ebay as an introduction to this site. If you have an interest in earning extra income through your websites, or perhaps even want to get out of your day job and stay at home with the kids while earning a great income from home I suggest that you have a look at this blog.

A Breath of Life

I’ve probably posted many pictures of this lovely rose before, but I can’t help it. It’s just such a beautiful rose.

I have this hybrid climbing tea rose planted at the end of our driveway. It’s right beside the small white picket fence and gate that leads into our backyard, and it rests on an arbour that is also in the entry way to the backyard. It’s perfect in this area.

I like the name of the rose too – Breath of Life. With it’s name and the fact that it’s at the entrance to my garden- my de-stressing place – it just seems perfect.

If you’ve recently asked to join the Green Thumb Sunday meme and I’ve sent you the blogroll code and instructions on how to put it on your site, but you find that you still aren’t on the list, please let me know.

Several people each week express and interest in joining our growing meme, but not everyone puts the blogroll on their site (a key factor to getting on the blogroll), or lets me know when they do have the blogroll on their site. Please leave a comment here if you have the blogroll on your site and I’ll make sure that you are listed on the blogroll ASAP.

Thanks!

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
