This is a photo of Chive buds and new Chive flowers that I took about two weeks ago. The chive flowers are actually beginning to wain now, but there’s still a few left.

I love growing Chives. They are one of the first plants to make an appearance each spring, often showing their green stems by the end of March. It’s not uncommon for us to be able to pick chives and use them in our cooking – salads, marinades, on top of foods – from mid April right through until the first snow fall in November or early December.

The flowers are just a lovely bonus! I love the buds before the flowers develop and bloom – they look a bit like garlic sections or tiny onion bulbs. Then the beautiful full petaled blossoms open and often stay around for two or three weeks.

Do you grow chives or other plants from the allium family? Edible or ornamental?

Check out the beautiful Hosta photo that I’ve got on Tricia’s Musings!

My chives are about five years old. They rarely bloom, buthey grow year round so I always have a steady supply. I’ve just recently planted one small much of green onions near them, all slightly shaded by my overgrown rosemary.

I almost finished visiting all of the GTS posts on sunday this week. Just now 12:38 Monday morning, so almost, lol!

I love chives. I cook with them often and that is one plant I must include in my herb garden every year!

I just love having fresh chives to cook with my vegetables. The blooms are a beautiful, added bonus! Have a great, sunny week! Chris

I actually have two kinds of chives – the very slender type (not sure what they’re called but they look like thin grass) and garlic chives. I love them both. By the way, I’ve tagged you for a meme at Feeding Time at the Zoo.

Im finding this too late – your chives are probally out of bloom by now – but if you collect a bunch of the heads, give them a rinse and then pack them into a jar, fill the jar with white vinegar and let it infuse for as long as you like – you will then have chive blossom vinegar – and its fantastic on salads! Cheers!
