There’s an interesting conversation going on about the Live Earth concert at Go Smell the Flowers.
The blog author asks the question:
Live earth is kicking off around the world today with performance in all 7 continents with over 10,000 events promised globally. Will it really help? Are we too late or no need for concern?
There’s been quite a few replies to that post. Some people are being quite pessimistic stating that whatever we do now won’t make a difference and that the message of the concert won’t really get through to many people. Others are more optimistic stating the changes they’ve made in their own lives towards becoming more green and how every little bit will help.
What do you think?
Do you believe global warming exists?
Whether you believe in global warming or not, do you think that if we all made a few changes in our lives it might help the environment or that it might really be a better way to live?
Chris and I aren’t totally green, but we’ve made a lot of changes in our lives over the years toward living green.
Here’s just a few of the things that we do:
- Almost all of our lights are energy efficient, as are our appliances.
- We turn the heat down in the winter
- We live a few blocks from work so we walk to work
- Our car is a 4 cyl and because we live so close to work and many small shops we really only use our car once a week or so for short trips to get groceries etc.
- We have a few small trees in our yard
- Not all of our plants are drought resistant but many are so I don’t have to water a lot
- We grow many of our own veggies and fruit
- Our garden is organic
- What we do purchase in the grocery store is local whenever possible
- We don’t eat much meat
- We rarely eat processed foods,
- We recycle and use recycled products if they are available
- We dry many of our clothes on the line instead of using the dryer
- We bring our own reusable bags to the grocery store.
- We try to use eco-friendly products whenever possible ie no harsh cleaning chemicals etc.
Do you do any of these things? Perhaps you have some more ideas on how to live green for those who read this site?

We don’t have a car, no airconditioning.
We are careful with our clothing.
Buy what doesn’t polute as much, what doesn’t come from far, re-use, recycle.
No posh presents for people at their birthday, but something homemade.
People love to have a wirtten poem on self made paper from old rags.

It all makes a difference not only living green but living with a mind toward setting ourselves a little aside for the greater good of all.

My problem with Live Earth is that it generated 1,000 tons of garbage, it would take 100,000 trees planted to offset its carbon emissions (in 24hrs), and the rockers traveled an estimated 200,000 miles by plane, train, and automobile to get there. And for what? To “bring to light” global warming? I think we are all aware of it, to be honest with you. I’m not a global warming denier or anything like that. I’m a big nature guy (and nature blogger!) who thinks we should all conserve, pollute less, and waste less, but the whole thing seemed a bit self-serving.
Also, and although I do believe global warming exists, I’m a bit skeptical as to how much of it is our fault. We definitely have a negative impact on the environment. Without a doubt humans negatively effect nature. But the earth has gone in and out of Ice Ages and in and out of tropical periods many many times, all before humans even existed. We’ve had times with ice at the equator and other times with lush green in Greenland.
Long story short, my take on global warming is simply that we should all take the time to conserve, pollute less, and waste less, and protect the environment around us.
Love the blog!

Well it’s interesting, but I think the Live Earth concerts were worthwhile, if only to get some communal global feeling of ‘we’re actually doing something’ after the knockdown of the various bush administration policies. Also we could be seeing the environment heading into politics as a result of it being publicy backed by an ex vice-president, along with his sellout movies and books. Once the world’s most powerful country starts taking a majority interest in the worlds environment then we could be on the right track, even if it is too late…
