Time to face the heat

by Tricia

It’s almost 9 pm and I’m gearing up to go outside and begin watering my garden.

It’s been a very hot day. It’s finally dropped down to 30 Celsius (86 F) but with humidity it’s still 36 Celsius (96.8). Wish me luck!

I didn’t water yesterday even though it’d been hot all day. We’d watered really well on Sunday evening. I figured I could let it go a day, even a hot day, but I certainly can’t let it go for two days when it’s this unbearably warm outside!

The one good thing about going out at this time is that my elderly stalker hopefully won’t notice me. If she does she’ll come and stare at me while I water. The staring isn’t so bad it’s when she talks and I can’t hear her so I have to keep stopping what I’m doing just to find out that she asked if today was Tuesday or to say “no rain, no rain” again for the third time that day.

She watched Chris and I all day Sunday when we were out getting work done in the garden. I just get irritated when I’m stared at for hours on end. Of course I then end up taking it out on my husband when he’s not who I’m mad at all.

With any luck none of my neighbors will be out and I can get the watering done and be back inside within an hour and a half at the most!

Anyone else having a heat wave?

It is so hot here and my tomatoes bushes are so pitiful!! We are on watering restrictions so I’ve been trying to water as much as I can – my poor little plants just look sad though 🙁

If I were in your shoes with this neighbor, I have to admitt Id have gone stark raving mad and probally would only garden in the middle of the night with a flashlight…I couldnt hack it at all.
Not knowing ‘the lay of the land’ there, I wonder if you couldnt erect a trellis or similar uncomplicated structure, and underplant it with a fast growing vine – if there are many windows she can spot you from – you might need a few…..ah well, just an idea from someone who would really not be able to cope with that situation – good luck to you both!

Here in Portugal we had a heat wave from last Friday to Monday. we reached 42ºC. Today we are having 26ºC but Friday we’ll have another heat wave with temperatures of at least 40ºC.
Regarding the neighbors, I know they can be very annoying, mine are for a different reason, if we come outside we have at least two kids walking through the front door to play with my kids, and sometimes it’s hard to say they can’t.
    Good luck.

Actually, her in Scandinavia, I wouldn’t have minded warmer weather. During the most popular vacation period in July, we have had lots of rain, and quite cool weather. August (when we´re bakc at work) seems to become hotter though…

Our lawn seems to like the weather, as it is growing like mad right now.
