Orchid Time Lapsed Video

by Tricia

Have you ever tried growing orchids?

I’ve been trying my hand at them for the past two years with mixed results. I lost one because I must have kept the medium it was growing in too moist, but I’d had it for two years before I lost it and I got two babies off of it. So I’d call that a semi success. Then I lost one of the babies too.

I ended up purchasing another Orchid last year and it’s still alive! So I have one baby that has quadrupled in size and an orchid that i’ve had for one year. Neither are showing signs of blooming anytime soon.

If you’ve grown orchids how did you do? Any tips to pass on?

I found this time lapsed video of a Orchid flower going from full bud to full blown blossom. It’s lovely.

The perfect gift for your curious loved one

by Tricia

Do you have a young botanist, biologist or simply a curious child (of any age) in your family?

If you do I might have a great gift idea for you.

What do you think of the idea of getting that curious child their own microscopes?

My brother had one when I was a kid- of course he was older than me, but I remember using it occasionally to take a closer look at things that I’d found and it was fun! It was educational too. Looking at the vein like system of a leaf microscopically was very interesting.

Optics Planet carries brand name microscopes of all types. They carry simple microscopes suitable for a child, right up to scientific stereo, compound, digital, photo or video camera microscopes. Quite an amazing assortment if you ask me. Anyone from a hobbyist to a high school or University student could use one of these microscopes for their studies. Anyone studying in the health care field – laboratory work, medical student or nurse would find a use for a microscope at some point along the way too.

Optics Planet has such a variety of microscopes that they have started a new site www.microscopes.com that while it’s still in the works is open for business.

If the idea of getting someone you love a microscope as a gift sounds good to you, I can make it sound just a little bit better. Optics Planet is offering their microscopes at a huge discount, some with savings of up to 70% off, plus they offer Free UPS on orders over $29.95, extended warranties, and a no hassle holiday return policy.

Take a look at their huge selection of microscopes and microscope accessories including all types of loupes magnifiers.

Do you have a dream garden Vacation?

by Tricia

Fellow gardeners – Have you ever thought about dream garden related vacations? Where would you love to go to tour botanical gardens or tropical jungle vegetation? Oops I think I just gave away my own dream garden vacation dreams.

Yes, I’d love to go to Costa Rica or similar places and take a jungle tour to see the birds, animals and luscious tropical plants. I’d come away drooling as I’d know that in my cool climate I’d never be able to grow anything like the plants and flowers I’d see on that trip.

Another dream vacation would be to go to England. Probably London England first. I’d want to visit as many Traditional English gardens as I could as well as some of the Royal Botanical gardens. I’m certain that I’d be able to grow some of the plants that I’d see on that trip.

If I’m not mistaken I think London is fairly expensive, well seeing as their pound is more than twice the value of our dollar it is, so I’d be looking for some Cheap Hotels in London . Nothing tacky or dirty – something nice but inexpensive. OMG I’m remembering some of the English movies and series that I’ve seen where you have a room but the washroom, or water closet as they call it, is shared by all of the residents of a floor. Ok so not that kind of London Hotels. Uh huh.

Obviously I haven’t done any research into this at all. I’m sure if I take a trip to England it will be a few years from now. I don’t even know if it would be best to stay in London to see some beautiful gardens or if there is a better area of England where most of the top gardens to visit would be. Perhaps someone could tell me. It wouldn’t hurt to start gathering information for my future dream trip.

Oh and if anyone has been to London – yes it would still be on the agenda even if all of the best gardens are on the other side of England – I’ve gotta see London! Perhaps you could recommend some nice Hotels in London that my husband and I could stay at? Something nice, close to the famous London attractions – but not very expensive.

Would anyone care to tell me what your dream garden vacation would be? Do you favor a particular type of garden? If you do where would you want to go to see the best of your favorite kind of garden?
