The birds are pigs!

by Tricia

My husband filled our two bird feeders on Wednesday evening. Both were empty as of sunset Friday.

I wish I had a photo to show you.

Once the feeders were filled the birds filled our yard. They were in the Rose of Sharon tree and sitting atop the tall roses. They were on the interlocking stones that we made our raised flower beds with. They were everywhere!

One of the bird feeders is quite large. It’s about a foot and a half tall and five or six inches in diameter. It holds a lot of seeds. Two days … just two days and it’s empty!

The other bird feeder is also about a foot and a half tall but it’s only two inches in diameter. It suits smaller seeds, the more expensive seeds like neger seeds. It’s empty too.

These birds are going to eat us out of house and home!

The big rat

by Tricia

You know what? I completely lost track of time over the last couple of days. I haven’t been feeling well again so I ended up spending the last few days pretty much lying around. I thought yesterday was Tuesday that’s how much time I ended up losing track of. It’s amazing to me that it’s Thursday already.

I guess it doesn’t help that I did something to hurt my foot on Sunday so I’ve been limping around. I’m a klutz so it’s not unusually for me to trip and hurt my ankle or foot, bang my knee or stub a toe, but this time round I have no idea what I did. I’ve been klutz free to the best of my knowledge!

Ok so now that you know why I haven’t posted for a few days I’d like to know what you know about RATS.

On Sunday my husband and I were in the kitchen putting a special tinted film on our window – which I’ll tell you about in another post in a few moments – and we both happened to gaze out at the garden at the same time and we saw a big rat beside our chiminea.

We’ve seen mice and rats in the yard before. I don’t think any of them live in our yard. One of our neighbors has a garage and shed in the backyard that touches our yard and I think the mice and rats might live in there. The neighbor on the other side also has an area that I’ve seen mice come from before. I’m not saying that there’s no possibility that the rats lives on our property but we don’t have as many nice hiding places as our neighbors do.

So how do I get rid of it?

I’m not big on killing animals. I don’t however want a rat population to continue to grow near my home.

What should we do?

The Aquarium that never was

by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

marinemural

This is a photo of an old building on Lakeshore Blvd. in Toronto, near the Redpath Sugar factory. Actually it might even be part of the factory.

This mural was painted on the side of the building quite a while ago when they were talking about Toronto getting an aquarium. I think that was more than 10 years ago. Well, obviously the aquarium never happened or else I’d probably have some additional photos to show you of the actual site.

I really wish it had come into being. I love aquariums. I guess the closest thing that we have anywhere near Toronto would be Marine Land in Niagara Falls – but that’s more of a show.

Oh, we do have a beautiful large zoo here in Toronto but it doesn’t have many aquatic animals or fish. Still, if you ever do come to Toronto and you enjoy zoo’s please do try to take the time to go to the Toronto Metropolitan zoo as I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I used to go several times a year, but I haven’t been there for perhaps the last three years. I guess it’s time for another visit very soon.

One of my favorite aquariums was in Vancouver. Every time I went to Vancouver I went to the aquarium. I used to love watching the Beluga whales. Unfortunately they were going to close down that aquarium and a few years ago they shipped most of the Belugas to Marine Land where I think they all died when they got an infection. So sad.

Do you have an aquarium or zoo near you? If so, do you go very often? At least once a year?
