Plant your seedlings before it gets too hot

by Tricia

Who’s busy in the garden today?

It’s still early enough in the season to plant veggies, annuals and perennials. If you are like me, and haven’t started planting yet get to it soon. The evenings in most places still cool down at night and this is perfect for helping new plants get established.

If you delay and don’t end up planting until it’s hot and humid pretty much 24 hours a day it will take a lot more care to help newly planted annuals and veggies grow and survive.

I guess I’m writing this partly as a reminder and motivator for myself as I’m way behind in my garden care, maintenance and planting. If I don’t plant the annuals and veggies that I’ve already purchased soon they will likely die as they are drying out and becoming root bound in their small containers.

Is anyone else as behind as I am?

Maybe I should change the name of this site to As the Garden dwindles.

The V garden bed

by Tricia

DSC02046

I’ve often referred to this small garden bed as “the V“. It’s located at the end of my driveway, and in truth I only own half of this small V shaped flower bed although all of the plants located within “the V” are mine.

At the back of the V you can see tiger lilies growing. On the front left you can see Globe Flowers which I’m sorry to say have finished blooming. They might produce another set of blooms for me in August if I get out there now and cut them down a bit.

In the middle there’s a Valencia rose that got hit hard this winter because I didn’t protect it. It’s still alive and has grown quite a bit since I took this photo.

To the right of the globe flowers there’s a cream colored Day lily, and right beside that is the beginning of our arched trellis that has the Breath of Life climbing rose and a lovely clematis growing on it on the V garden bed side, and a Harlequin Honeysuckle on the other side.

I just realized that you can also see some dwindling daffodils in this photo too. There’s about 10 daffodil bulbs planted in this flower bed.

So that’s “the V”. Now you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about when I discuss my many garden beds. This one competes with another tiny flower bed at the side of my house for smallest flower bed.

Storm Watch!

by Tricia

It’s hot here today! 31 Celsius (87.8 F) with a humidity factor bringing the temperature up to 40 Celsius (104 F). See I told you it gets hot and humid here in Toronto.

It’s been dark and kind of overcast for the last couple of hours, but just a few minutes ago it got almost as dark as late evening and the wind picked up like crazy.

A storm’s a comin!

Now there’s thunder and lightening but very little rain. So far.

This is the kind of weather that causes Tornado’s to spring up in the Southern Ontario region. I hope that one doesn’t, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of a few towns that got hit by one.

Chances are also high that our power will go out at some point in the near future. A couple of years ago when there was a good storm like this one’s shaping up to be my husband and I heard a loud crack and saw a giant flash of light off to the east. Turns out it was a transformer that got hit by lightening and blew up! That kept the electricity out for a while!

Wish me luck?

I’m sure my plants will love the extra water and nitrogen in the air from the lightening … but I really hate thunder storms.
