A tree root house?

by Tricia

I came across a picture of an interesting house that appears to be made from some kind of tree roots and stone.

What do you think of this house/ building? Doesn’t it look like it’s built with with tree roots? Or maybe it’s just made to look that way …

BTW sorry I missed Green Thumb Sunday. My back was too sore after working in the garden for hours on Saturday. I just couldn’t move!

A little yard work

by Tricia

I couldn’t stop myself … I couldn’t resist … On Monday I finally went outside and did some yard work! First Spring cleaning for the garden this year!

Of course I had to pick a rather cool day and naturally, as per usually, I didn’t go out during the afternoon when it would be warmer and brighter … nope, Chris and I waited until it was about 7 pm before deciding to go outside to take some pictures of the Crocus and other plants that we spotted coming up and that of course turned into what was supposed to be a short lawn raking session.

All in all we were outside for close to two hours and the temp fell to -1 Celsius (30 F) by the time we came back indoors tired and frozen!

Most of the leaves and dead grass has now been raked off the front and back lawns. There were a few areas, shady areas, where the ground was still quite hard and the leaves were a frozen mass stuck to the grass. LOL

We even started to take some of the leaves off of the garden beds. I was surprised at how many of our plants were growing! Now that we’re getting some rain and it’s above zero most of the time I expect to see a lot more green – perhaps by the weekend.

I discovered that the Sedum had little green nubs coming up, there were some tulip leaves, maybe some Grape hyacinth leaves, our two hydrangeas have leaf buds, and the Chives had doubled in size from when I first discovered them last week. I also think some of the German Iris leaves had started to come up and green as well. There’s so much life in the garden hidden under a thin layer of leaves.

Have you been out in your yard doing any Spring cleaning yet? Discovered any plants that you didn’t expect to be coming up yet?

The crocus are finally up!

You know that Spring has truly arrived once you see Snowdrops and Crocus’ coming up in peoples gardens!

My crocus’ have made their first appearance today. Two tiny little flowers in the sunniest patch of my backyard lawn.

Yellow Crocus again

Actually there might be crocus all over the place. We have a lot of leaves from the neighbors maple tree in our gardening beds (just a light dusting of ones that fell in the fall that we didn’t clean up) and at the edges of the raised garden beds. It’s at the edges of the lawn near the stones of the raised garden beds that I planted the crocus bulbs, so there might very well be several plants under those leaves.

I think I might go out into the garden this afternoon and rake up the leaves, rake the lawn and perhaps clear out some of the dead foliage in the garden beds. The weather forecast for the next weeks says that it will be above freezing during the day and zero at night most nights for the next week with only one night well below zero … so I think it’s finally safe to get out there and do a little garden work.

I won’t prune the roses yet. It’s still far too early to do that. However, I suspect with this warmer than average March we’ve had the roses and other shrubs and trees in the area will come out of dormancy at least a week if not two weeks earlier than they normally do … well if the weather holds, that is. I mean, I can already see some leaf buds on many of my roses.

How is your garden doing this Spring? Have you noticed that a few of your plants are blooming or coming out of dormancy a little earlier than normal?
