Tips on how to learn more about the plants growing in your garden

by Tricia

I often receive questions that ask me to explain in detail how to care for specific perennials. While I am working on having a very large index of care information for specific plants it does take time to create this information.

Now, even though I grew up in a family that gardened, I still found myself somewhat bewildered when I moved into my current home and started a garden of my own. I was growing a number of new plants – perennial and annual that I’d never worked with in the past. I too, had tons of questions.

What did I do in order to brush up on my knowledge?

Well, I went searching on the internet to find information on specific plants and gardening techniques. This was a wonderful method of getting information and my list of gardening related bookmark is huge! Unfortunately I also came across information that contradicted other information that I’d found.

That’s when I began buying gardening books. I bought a few good general gardening books, one or two about perennials and annuals, and a few that discussed gardening in my particular area, or at least in my Country. That was one of the best moves that I could have made. Now I’ve got 10+ very helpful gardening books at hand whenever I need to look something up.

Practice, experimentation, talking to other gardeners, and joining garden forums such as the Garden Web also helped quite a bit.

I observed my plants carefully in the first year on my own, taking notes occasionally as to the various plants bloom time, how often it bloomed, when it first started to grow in the spring and so on. I learned a lot just by observing my plants and caring for them as best I could.

Of course nothing pleased me more than when my mother, visiting from our home town and staying with us for a week or so, remarked as she gazed at our garden, “It’s so nice to know that one of our children inherited my green thumb”. What higher compliment could one gardener give another?

If you are just starting your garden, or still in the process of learning about new plants you might want to pick up one or all of the following books:

Perennials for Dummies by Marcia Tatroe ISBN 0764550306;

Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials: 10th Anniversary Revised and Expanded Edition by Ellen Phillips and C. Colston Burrell ISBN: 0875965709;

The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques by Tracy Disabato-Aust, Steven M. Still ISBN: 0881924148.

Enjoy your garden!

Great flight and vacation deals with Dial a Flight

by Tricia

Spring is just about here, and for many of us, thoughts of holidays and travel are starting to fill our heads. Yes, I know that many of you might already be vacationing this month since your kids might have a week off for March Break, but perhaps some of you are planning late spring or summer vacations too?

In the last few years my brother and his wife have become world travelers. Planning exotic vacations to Countries they’ve never visited before. Two years ago they went to Africa. A month ago they went to India. Now they are planning a trip to Nepal for next years holiday.

Now, I’ve visited a site called DialaFlight.com. It’s based out of the UK and mostly services the UK market, but I was thinking that even North Americans planning trips such as ones my brother and his wife have been on recently might take advantage of flights and travel packages offered by Dial A Flight.

Why? Well, I know that on many of my brothers recent trips they ended up stopping over in the UK and catching another flight from England. Why not use Dial a Flight’s offerings for that extra leg of the trip and save some money? More money in your pocket means that you’ll have more to spend when you get to your destination right?

If anyone is thinking of going to Asia you should take a look at the deals that can be found at Dial a Flight. For example a Bangkok Flight from London’s Heathrow Airport is going for only £250 (a little over $500 US) right now. I think that’s an excellent deal.

Other than the prices and great deals, you know what’s really cool about this company? They hire sales people who have been to the destinations that they offer flights and vacation packages to – nothing like talking to someone that’s been where you want to go.

If you are based in the UK or even if your flying through the UK to another destination keep Dial a Flight in mind. You could save some money.

The garden car

by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

Ever wondered what to do about that old car that your husband insists that he’s going to fix?

Or perhaps your lovely neighbors have a used car lot on their front lawn? Take your cue from this picture and grow a garden in the car!

If it’s been sitting long enough they’ll be plenty of organic material on and in the car. Just add some soil and compost, get one of the packages of “wild garden” or “Country Garden” seeds, sprinkle and lightly water. Before you know it, flowers will grow where only rust was before and you’ll wonder why you didn’t try this earlier.
