Floral arrangement in Oil by Ashely Cecil

by Tricia

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being contacted by a talented artist. Her website is located at AshleyCecil.com. She’d just finished a stunning floral arrangement oil painting and had posted a photo of it on her website and thought that I, and my readers, might be interested in viewing her work.

Here’s a copy of the floral painting:

centerforwomenfamiliesgala-small.jpg

Isn’t that just gorgeous? If you’d like to take a better look at the painting and watch a time lapse video of it’s creation please feel free to visit her site “The Painting Journalist”.

She created this painting after attending a gala celebrating 20 years of “Service and Survival” for The Center for Women and Families. Approximately 1000 guests attended the gala and the ballroom was filled with lovely white floral arrangements. It was the floral arrangements which inspired her to create the lovely oil painting.

Ashley sells her paintings to raise money for non-profit organizations. The painting that I’ve shown you today is for sale, and a portion of the sale price will be donated to the Center for Women and Families.

The Center for Women and Families has been serving the Louisville area since 1912. Originally a YWCA, The Center is now a private non-profit agency serving fourteen counties in Kentucky and Indiana. Last year, The Center served over 30,000 people through three main programs: the Domestic Violence Program, the Rape Crisis Program, and the Family and Community Support Programs.

Purchasing this painting will support a great cause and assist in helping women in need of assistance get back on their feet again.

Ashley describes herself and her work:

Welcome to the marriage of painting and social activism. I’ve been creating art ever since discovering that my mom’s Chanel lipstick made a great oil pastel. Through formal art education and years of professional experience, the adult version of this vocation has evolved into my own job title, “painting journalist.” I’m addressing philanthropic issues utilizing painting as my medium of communication. Much like a photojournalist, I travel to locations/events of cultural interest and capture them, only with my brush.

Please do visit Ashley’s site. She’s a very talented artist and her paintings cover a wide range of “Life and Living” related genres.

Lovely Canna – over-wintering Cannas

I’ve been growing Cannas in my garden for the last five years. I guess you could say I’ve been growing them ever since I started my garden.

I enjoy their large tropical leaves and lovely flowers. Once they grow enough to start blooming each summer they usually don’t stop until the weather begins to cool substantially in late September or early October.

I should mention that I grow my cannas in pots so that I can easily move them indoors in the winter. The pots are placed directly into my garden beds in late spring or early summer to grow among the many other plants.

As the weather begins to cool in the fall I bring my many cannas into my enclosed back porch. I spray them using a spray bottle with a few drops of liquid detergent added to the water to help remove any bugs that have hung on to the plants. Then I let my cannas slowly die down and go dormant.

Once the cannas are dormant I bring them indoors and keep them in my basement in a cool fairly dark place. Of course I bring the cannas indoors if the outdoor temperatures drop too low before the cannas have gone dormant. When that happens I just let them finish going dormant in the cool dark basement.

I’d say that the cannas are always in our basement by early November each year. There they will stay until the temperatures warm enough to place them in the back porch once more, and then outdoors. This means that they are usually kept indoors until the end of April or so.

While the cannas are in the basement I check on them periodically and give them a small watering every three to four weeks. I can assess the health of the tubers when I check on them, and keep them alive yet in a dormant state by only watering them when they are very dry.

Around mid-February each year I move the cannas closer to one of the basement windows so that they can get some filtered light. I also begin to water them approximately every two weeks.

They quickly come out of dormancy and begin to grow new leaves.

At this time, three of the five cannas that I have in my basement have a fair number of leaves. They might have started growing faster this year! Two are still dormant and I’m hoping that they will come out of dormancy soon.

Most people that grow cannas in cool climates either buy new tubers each year, or dig the tubers up in the fall and store them in sawdust or a dry substrate for the winter. They are stored in a cool dry place.

I tried that method during my first year of gardening and lost all of my cannas! The following year I began my little experiment of growing them in pots and bringing the pots indoors just as I’ve described above. I’ve successfully kept the cannas alive each year with this method and I’m quite happy to continue using this technique.

Now that the canna leaves are beginning to grow I know that Spring can’t be too far off. Within a month or less my crocus’ will be coming up in the lawn, and other spring bulbs such as tulips will be starting to awaken and grow. I can’t wait.

How do you over-winter your exotic plants? I’d love to hear if you have any interesting methods.

Interactive maps at Hotel Magician let you pick a hotel in the area You want to stay in

by Tricia

I just visited a site that has created an innovative way to search for hotels. Anyone traveling for business or pleasure could use the Hotel Magician website’s interactive hotel maps to find a hotel in just about any place throughout the world. Hotel Magician has listings for over 55,000 hotels.

What I like about this site is that you can go to the front page and type in any city, airport code or even a major landmark and the interactive map will bring up hotels from that area. You can search for hotels within a specified range of of one to one hundred miles from the city or area that you’ve typed in as your search term.

Just to try the system out I did a search for hotels in the Toronto, Ontario area. Hotel Magician brought up a long list of Toronto Hotels. Each hotel had a brief description, a star rating, and listed prices for the various types of rooms/beds within the hotel. If I wanted to I could sort the listings by Top Picks, Price, Rating, Hotel Name, Area or Landmark. I could also select up to five hotels in the list and view them on a map.

The most interesting way to search of course would be to use the interactive hotel maps. Just look at the travel tools menu in the left sidebar and select the interactive hotel maps. You’ll be brought to a page where you can type in the city, landmark, airport code and distance from the location and then view the hotels in the area using the interactive map.

Toronto and the surrounding area has a lot of hotels, so when I tried out the interactive map I used the zoom function on the map to show just the hotels located in Toronto’s downtown area. Once there I could click on hotels in select areas and then click on the description for more information or begin to make a discount hotel reservations. It was so easy! I was also pleased to see that if I could filter my results on the map by hotel brand if I was interested in staying at a particular hotel chain.

I really like this method of searching for a hotel. I mean, normally when you are searching for a hotel to stay in, in another city you might not know the layout of the city all that well. You know what types of area or tourist attractions you want to be near, but a simple list of hotels doesn’t always give you enough information and you could end up booking a room miles away from the part of town that you’d rather have stayed in. Mistakes like that could ruin a holiday or business trip.

With Hotel Magician you can be sure that you’ll book a hotel room in the area of a city that you want to stay in. It’s that simple. Check it out for yourself.
