Waiting for Spring

With the taste of Spring like weather we’ve been having lately – especially this past Friday! – I can barely wait until the first spring flowers in my garden start to appear!

One of the first flowers to show up is always the Crocus’.

I planted yellow and purple ones in the lawn and just at the edges of my garden beds (lawn edges). So come the end of March I should have some of these lovelies baring their lovely blooms.

Purple Crocus

One of the next flowers to appear each Spring is my Hellebore. I love this flower. They’re so pretty. I just wish they’d lift their flower heads more so that we could enjoy their blooms better. The flowers are always dropping and hiding behind the plants leaves.

If you have a garden or have planted some flowers in your yard which ones are you most looking forward to seeing come Spring?

Green Thumb members – Are you guys still posting most Sundays?

Only a few of you check in regularly. Shady Gardener being the most frequent. I thought that most members had agreed to come and check in on my Green Thumb Post so that all of our members would know who made a new post?

From my end it feels like very few people are participating. I’m getting lonely! If that’s not the case, please do check in on each new Green Thumb Post that I make so that I and all the rest of the members who are participating that week will know you have made a new GTS post that week.

The cold weather’s back, but not for long

I’d swear that we’ve had enough warm, well not warm, but above freezing days, in February that some of my roses might have been fooled into thinking that it was almost Spring.

I’m sure I saw a few tiny leaf buds on some of my roses in the front yard the other day.

Of course it’s gone back to freezing – absolutely freezing! – cold again so i won’t be out there closely examining my roses until we have another span of decent weather. Right now it’s -10 Celsius (14 F) outside but feels like -16 Celsius (3.2 F) with the windchill … that’s pretty cold!

So I think I’ll stay indoors if I can and just think about how nice my garden will be in just a month or two.

Here’s a photo of one of my top favorite roses – Breath of Life. Isn’t it lovely?

White orchids and orchid babies

I have three Orchids. Two are the more common variety and one is a little different – but I can’t remember what it’s called! The one that is slightly less common produces white flowers that look like this:

White Orchids 15

This is actually my oldest Orchid. It hasn’t bloomed for a while – like maybe three years. It was too busy producing baby plants!

Orchid air roots and baby

It has two or three baby Orchid plants growing on it. All are high above the main plant and have well developed air roots.

I’ll cut them off in the near future and plant them and hope that they continue to grow. Odd looking air roots though aren’t they?

The second white Orchid is brand new. I just bought it in early January and it was in bloom when I bought it and it’s STILL blooming! That’s almost two months worth of blooms!

White Orchids 11

I’m so happy that so many of my “indoor” plants are blooming this year. We’ve had flowers all year round between the plants in the garden and my seemingly every blooming indoor plants. It certainly helps keep the winter blues at bay!
