Lovely Amaryllis

amaryllis

I have three different Amaryllis plants. A flower from one of them is pictured above. Unfortunately I have no idea of the name of this Amaryllis.

Each fall I store my amaryllis in my cool dark basement and then, usually, towards the end of December or the beginning of January I bring them upstairs to my kitchen where they can site in a bright south facing window.

I’m a bit behind this year since I sort of forgot about my amaryllis for a while. Oops! I did give them some water a week and a half ago though. I guess I’d better go downstairs this evening and bring the plants upstairs! Hopefully they’ll still bloom in March like they usually do!

Want your Amaryllis to grow straight?

by Tricia

It’s actually pretty simple to make sure that your Amaryllis grows straight. All you have to do is pay attention to it and turn it every so often.

As you probably know, the Amaryllis puts out it’s lovely flowers on a tall stalk. However, just like many other plants, Amaryllis has a tendency to bend towards the source of light.

If you notice that your Amaryllis stalk or stem is starting to bend as it seeks the best source of lighting, simply turn the pot half way. The sun or light source will draw the stem toward it again and the plant will “accidentally” right itself and end up with a straight stem.

Turn your Amaryllis’ vase or pot a quarter or half turn every few days, or at least once a week to keep it straight throughout the growing season.

This is actually a good thing to do with many of your houseplants in order to have full and healthy foliage all the way around the plant.

Choosing your Amaryllis bulbs

by Tricia

Choose your Amaryllis bulbs carefully. You will find that bulbs that have started to grow while in the store displays are often stressed, and in that first year the flowers will be smaller- if they produce any at all.

You want to pick bulbs that either don’t have, or whose bud tip is barely showing. Make sure that the bulb still feels firm when you touch it as well. I’ve often found bulbs rotting in the store shelves because they’ve been kept in a too warm area.

Many of the bulb kits contain a bag of peat moss, a cheap plastic pot and a small bulb. You might do better trying to find larger bulbs as they often grow and have two stalks instead of one. It’s far better to perhaps purchase loose quality bulbs of a good size and plant them yourself in a good soil mix. I’m sure you’ll appreciate the results.
