Clearing up a few things about Green Thumb Sunday

by Tricia

I’m not sure why, but lately it seems people who want to join Green Thumb Sunday are questioning putting the blogroll on their site.

As it says on the Join Green Thumb Sunday page the blogroll does not have to be in your sidebar. You can put it in a post or on a page (depending on your blogging platform) and link to that page or post from your sidebar.

The blogroll does have to be on your site if you want to be an official member of Green Thumb Sunday. The blogroll helps promote all of our sites to any visitors who happen to be on one of the Green Thumb Sunday members sites. It also easily allows members of Green Thumb Sunday to visit one another on Sundays and through the weeks to see what each member has posted for each Green Thumb Sunday.

How can you participate without knowing who the rest of the members are? Green thumb Sunday is not just about making a post on Sundays, it’s about visiting other gardening and related websites, getting idea’s from what others are doing in their gardens, and I suppose to encourage others in their gardening and landscaping endeavours.

Yes the blogroll is getting long. I knew it eventually would. That’s why I’ve always allowed the members of GTS to put the blogroll on a separate page of their site.

Another thing that looks nice and keeps your sidebars tidy is to roll up the blogroll into an expandable menu. On many of my blogs I use Flooble’s expandable script to roll up my menus, category lists, archives and so on to keep the sidebars tidy. You can customize the look of these expandable menus so that the colors suit your blogs theme too. Try it out if you’d like to.

There’s also been a few people lately who didn’t realize I suppose the blogroll would actually produce a list of blogs on their site. I think that they thought the code I was sending would just be the Green Thumb Sunday logo. The logo is in the email that I send out to people who want to join, but so is the blogroll code. The only thing that you must do in order to get on the list is put the blogroll on your site.

Another misconception that I’ve heard recently is that people think only gardening blogs are participating. Some have hesitated to join because they don’t have a gardening blog and others have decided not to join when they saw that not everyone on the list was a gardening blog.

Let me clear this up. Green Thumb Sunday is open to all. I’d love everyone to participate each Sunday but I realize that you have lives and can’t always do that. Participation is required at least once a month though.

Any kind of blog may join. All that is required is that when you make your Green Thumb Sunday post is that it be a photo of something to do with gardening, nature, wildlife or a landscape. Most people opt to post photos of the plants that they grow in their gardens or even house plants but you do not have to only post photos of plants.

I’d also like to remind all of the members of Green Thumb Sunday that we had a major slow down last winter. Now that it’s summer in the areas where most of our members live I’d like to suggest that you take some extra photos and save some of them for winter. Or during the winter months take some lovely outdoor photos of snow, ice on trees, sunlight sparkling through an icicle … anything like that is perfectly fine. Lets just keep this going through the whole year this year. 🙂

The GTS membership is growing!

by Tricia

Ok, so we’ve had a number of people in the last week or so requesting to sign up for Green Thumb Sunday.

I believe that I’ve only got one more request siting in my mailbox for a person who’s waiting to be added to the blogroll. I’ll be getting to that person shortly.

Green Thumb Sunday is growing weekly. Every week there must be 10 or so people that contact me requesting to join. Not all of them seem to get back to me to tell me they’ve added the blogroll to their site though.

If you’ve added the blogroll to your site but forgot to let me know please leave a comment in this post and I’ll visit your site and add you to the list if everything checks out ok. We’re always happy to have more gardener and nature lovers on the list.

I haven’t been the best lately about getting around to visit all the participating sites. I do hope you’ll forgive me for that. I’ve been so ill for the last few months, and I earn my living off the internet so more often than not I’m slowly puttering away at the build up of work that I have and that doesn’t leave me much time to visit websites – even though I really would like to do that!

I hope to rectify my lack of visiting member sites very soon!

I do hope that the majority of you are taking the time to try to visit some if not all of the GTS websites each Sunday or through the week? That is, after all, why I created Green Thumb Sunday. So we could visit garden and nature related sites, see what other people are doing in their gardens, perhaps get some ideas of our own, and to share information about plants and techniques. You might even make some great friends too!

Just like me, I know that everyone can’t get around to the sites every week, but do try. There’s nothing better than writing a post about something close to your heart, or perhaps about a problem that you are having and getting a response from others that may be able to help.

Now, if you decide to join the blogroll and meme after reading this post I may not be able to add your site in time for tomorrows Green Thumb Sunday postings … but take the time to make your own GTS post, and visit some of the sites on the Green Thumb Sunday blogroll so that the other members will know that you’re part of our little club.

Enjoy!

Longing for Spring!

Well, as some of you know right now I’m having a blog party over at Tricia’s Musings to celebrate my first year of blogging. Yep, Tricia’s Musings is one year old!

I’m having a pseudo ICE garden party over there. Go have a look at the photos of the ice garden and the ice bar. MMMMM lots of chocolate over there too. Yum!Ok I know I can’t complain about our winter here at all. Others have had much worse, particularly people who usually have great winters … but winter has finally arrived as of this week. We’ve had snow, finally, and now very cold temperatures. Right now it’s -12 c (10.4 F). Brrrr!

So I’m jonesing for Spring. Here’s a flower, a tulip and other spring flowers, that I’m longing to see in just a few short months:

Red Tulip

I’ve noticed that only a portion of the Green Thumb Sunday members have been playing lately. I know that while I’ve been posting regularly I haven’t been visiting as often as I should. My reasons are that I’ve been too busy trying to raise money to keep the bills paid (I’m home sick with no income coming in so I’m doing paid posts to earn some money), and I’ve been very ill lately.

I am wondering why others aren’t playing though. Have you lost interest? Or is it just because it’s winter and you don’t have photos to post? Remember photos do not have to be current. They also don’t have to be of a garden or a plant. It could be a nice scene from nature, something outdoors … use your imagination.

I created this meme so that we could show off our creative talents and our gardens. A great bonus that we get from interacting with each other is that we get a boost in traffic, some extra links to our sites, and perhaps some regular visiters too.

I’m going to go through the list and people that haven’t played for at least two months or haven’t even updated thier site in the last month will probably be removed. I’ll leave messages if I’m considering removing you from the list.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
