The sunflowers survived

Remember all those sunflowers that I had to chop down to only three feet in early September because I got a citation from the city saying they were too tall?

Well, they lived after they were brutally chopped and they’ve continued to produce blooms.

I really thought the sunflowers would die after having half their height or more chopped off, but they survived. I suppose if they were the kind that only produced one flower they wouldn’t have made it, but the kind I grow has multiple flower heads and stems.

Are your sunflowers still blooming?

Update – the story about how and why we had to cut down our sunflowers is here and here.

A lovely pink Balloon flower.

I believe my pink balloon flowers have stopped blooming, but my blue Balloons are still pushing out a few blooms each day. Soon, now that it finally seems to be cooling down a bit, they will stop blooming all together.

I’ve found these flowers to be very easy to grow once they get started. I’ve only had one transplant fail and that was a clump of white Balloon flowers that I took from my parents home after my mother passed away. I just couldn’t get that clump to grow. I believe that Balloon flowers have long tap roots and most plants with similar root structures do not transplant well.

Hey, I had to try.

Wordless Wednesday

I can’t believe it. With this extra warm October weather we’ve been having I think my roses are blooming even more than they did through most of the summer. The garden looks lovely.

We’ve also had a lot of rain in the last week. Much needed rain, and it’s really helped give the garden a much needed boost.
