Crocosmia not blooming well

Crocosmia is a very pretty summer flower that often bears orange or fiery red flowers on vertical stems.

I mentioned that I grow Crocosmia in a recent post and said that some of my clumps were getting quite large and crowding out other plants.

What I didn’t realize was that if the clumps get too large, enough that individual Crocosmia begin to crowd one another that their blooms will suffer.

If you find that your Crocosmia are blooming poorly do think about dividing the clump. Poor bloom and a thick stand of foliage are two indications that the Crocosmia needs rejuvenation.

In the early spring dig up the clump and divide it gently into several smaller portions.

If you examine your clumps you’ll notice that there are two different forms of roots and new growth. You’ll find that some corms have produced underground stems with roots (stolons) that are destined to send up new shoots. Detach and plant these tiny new plants on their own. The other form of growth that you’ll see is a chain of corms along a slender root. Keep these chains attached as you replant for best success.

In the spring, crocus’ are one of the first flowers that I have the pleasure of seeing emerge. Sometimes they come up as early as Mid-March, often between melting patches of snow.

I have crocus’ planted in my lawn. Not in the high traffic areas, but in various places on my front and back lawn for a natural kind of look. It’s very nice when I can look outside and see the vibrant yellow and purple crocus flowers peeking out amid the grass as it too begins to turn the pretty green of spring.

Want your Amaryllis to grow straight?

It’s actually pretty simple to make sure that your Amaryllis grows straight. All you have to do is pay attention to it and turn it every so often.

As you probably know, the Amaryllis puts out it’s lovely flowers on a tall stalk. However, just like many other plants, Amaryllis has a tendency to bend towards the source of light.

If you notice that your Amaryllis stalk or stem is starting to bend as it seeks the best source of lighting, simply turn the pot half way. The sun or light source will draw the stem toward it again and the plant will “accidentally” right itself and end up with a straight stem.

Turn your Amaryllis’ vase or pot a quarter or half turn every few days, or at least once a week to keep it straight throughout the growing season.

This is actually a good thing to do with many of your houseplants in order to have full and healthy foliage all the way around the plant.
