I can’t catch up with the garden work

by Tricia

I’m so behind in my garden work. I think I’ll finally have the summer work finished when autumn hits.

As I’ve said before I just haven’t been feeling well enough to get into the garden daily, sometimes not even once a week. I almost don’t dare walk in the garden as I see all the work that needs to be done and if I’m not up to doing it, it tears at me.

On Sunday we got some work done in the garden. My husband was out weeding the front boulevard flowerbed and he put up these 1.5 foot by 1.5 foot bamboo type fence things in front of the flowerbed where it meets the sidewalk. It looks good.

Over the last two weeks in my two or so garden work visits I’ve managed to plant all the roses that I purchased in June, one honeysuckle – why did I buy two? I’ve already got a dropmore!, a hydrangea, and two clematis vines.

We had purchased three new passion flower vines. Those I did not plant. I kept them in the containers they came in and placed them where I could make the vines grow on an object (bird feeder pole) or fence. I have to bring the passion flower vines and other tropical plants indoors once it gets cool so there’s no point in planting them.

We still need to put down the composted soil that we recovered from our composter a couple of months ago, and we haven’t even put mulch down on the flowerbeds yet. See I’m behind.

Are you behind in your garden work too?

The garden is shaping up

by Tricia

Well, I finally managed to tidy up my garden and my arms have the scratches all over them to prove it!

Every rose I have has been pruned so now there are no more dead twigs standing up, visible over the new growth and blooms.

The garden looks so much better!

Chris and I went out yesterday afternoon and purchased 5 new roses, two clematis vines, three passion flower vines, a hibiscus, a blue Hydrangea and two fuchsia plants. Oh we got some more annuals as well. I guess that with all those vines, our existing cannas and jasmine plants that our garden will have a tropical feel to it this year.

My back ached each evening after I was done working in the garden but luckily felt better each morning. I thought I was going to get away without having any sore muscles but my legs are a bit stiff today. At least it doesn’t seem like I’ll be as achy as I was a month ago when I over did it in the garden!

Now I just need to get all the new plants planted – perennials and annuals, and get some mulch down too.

Does the work ever end?

The V garden bed

by Tricia

DSC02046

I’ve often referred to this small garden bed as “the V“. It’s located at the end of my driveway, and in truth I only own half of this small V shaped flower bed although all of the plants located within “the V” are mine.

At the back of the V you can see tiger lilies growing. On the front left you can see Globe Flowers which I’m sorry to say have finished blooming. They might produce another set of blooms for me in August if I get out there now and cut them down a bit.

In the middle there’s a Valencia rose that got hit hard this winter because I didn’t protect it. It’s still alive and has grown quite a bit since I took this photo.

To the right of the globe flowers there’s a cream colored Day lily, and right beside that is the beginning of our arched trellis that has the Breath of Life climbing rose and a lovely clematis growing on it on the V garden bed side, and a Harlequin Honeysuckle on the other side.

I just realized that you can also see some dwindling daffodils in this photo too. There’s about 10 daffodil bulbs planted in this flower bed.

So that’s “the V”. Now you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about when I discuss my many garden beds. This one competes with another tiny flower bed at the side of my house for smallest flower bed.
