The birds are back

We have birds that stick around year round but I don’t see them in large groups or all that often through the winter.

Yes, a few birds each day in the winter months is a normal sighting, but now that Spring is approaching and the snow has melted the birds are hanging out in our garden again.

I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing 10 or 20 birds sitting on my laundry line, or scattered throughout the yard perhaps hunting the garden beds and grass for signs of earthworms or other interesting food items.

Luckily I haven’t see too many squirrels yet. I imagine that they’ll be digging in my garden beds soon too. Either looking for nuts and other goodies that they buried in the past or hiding new goodies.

Have you noticed more wildlife in your garden now that the weather is getting better?






Coupons for garden merchants at Coupon Chief

Did you know that CouponChief.com lists a number of well known stores – more than 1000 I believe, where you can find coupon codes to use at the many stores listed in their directory to save money on anything from the product itself, a percentage discount on your purchase or even for free shipping?

Browsing the CouponChief site earlier today I was pleased to discover that they have a few gardening related merchants listed.

I found listings for Spring Hill Nursery coupon deals that would give you $25 off purchases off $50 or more, and I also found a deal for Spring Hill Nursery’s one cent sale.

Among the other garden related merchants I found a deal for $20 off purchases of $50 or more using a Michigan Bulb coupon. There are several other home and garden related merchants listed at Coupon Chief.

I didn’t go through all of the garden related merchants to find out what deals they are offering. However, if the two that I’ve told you about are any indication you might want to scoot over there and check out the deals on your own if you are thinking of buying some gardening products now that Spring has arrived and the gardening season is just about ready to start up again.

Foxglove – an old favorite

Well, this isn’t the best photo I’ve ever taken, but it seems that this is one of the only photos that I happen to have of this particular Foxglove plant. Honestly, some where in my gardening notes I have the name of this species written down, but I can’t remember exactly what species it is at the moment.

Foxglove are lovely plants to grow in the garden. Flower stalks can range from eighteen inches to four feet tall. There can be dozens of elongated bell-shaped flowers on each stalk. The color of the flowers can range from white, cream, yellow to pink, rose, peach, purple and almost black.

There are perennial, annual and biennial varieties of Foxglove (Digitalis). The most popular kind are biennial which means that one year they will only have green leaves, and then the second year the plants flower, set seed and die.

If you enjoy growing foxglove and happen to have the biennial variety you should plant seeds or young plants two years in a row in order to have flowering plants each year. One single plant can produce thousands of tiny seeds, which may germinate readily in your garden.
