The birds are pigs!

by Tricia

My husband filled our two bird feeders on Wednesday evening. Both were empty as of sunset Friday.

I wish I had a photo to show you.

Once the feeders were filled the birds filled our yard. They were in the Rose of Sharon tree and sitting atop the tall roses. They were on the interlocking stones that we made our raised flower beds with. They were everywhere!

One of the bird feeders is quite large. It’s about a foot and a half tall and five or six inches in diameter. It holds a lot of seeds. Two days … just two days and it’s empty!

The other bird feeder is also about a foot and a half tall but it’s only two inches in diameter. It suits smaller seeds, the more expensive seeds like neger seeds. It’s empty too.

These birds are going to eat us out of house and home!

A little rose named Sunsprite

by Tricia

Sunsprite Rose

Sunsprite. What an aptly named rose.

This gem of a rose is located in the back flower bed of my garden.

Considering that this rose is not all that tall – perhaps 3 feet at it’s tallest – I really should have planted it in a more prominent position so that I could enjoy it’s lovely flowers more often.

When this rose blooms I can see it’s flowers from my kitchen window so there’s no worry that it’s lost among other plants in my garden.

Like many of my other roses the blooms of summer are a slightly different color than it’s spring blooms. This rose has a medium yellow bloom in the spring but as you can see in the heat of summer it’s much paler with white edges on the outer petals.

Do you grow Sunsprite?

An antique Souvenir

Souvenir de la malmaison rose

This is a small but lovely rose called Souvenir de la Mal Maison. It’s an antique rose. It’s also fragrant, not as fragrant as some of my other antiques like Compte De Chambord, but fragrant none the less.

I say this is a small rose because mine has only ever grown to a maximum of 2 feet in height. I believe that I’ve read it would grow larger, perhaps to three feet, but mine has never grown larger than 2 feet. Being a small rose I have it placed near the front of my flower bed so it doesn’t get lost among the plants that often grow tall.

Does anyone else grow Souvenir de las Mal Maison or antique roses? I enjoy growing the antiques for their beauty and fragrance. I also enjoy growing them because they are often hardier then many of the hybrid teas.

I have another rose photo on Tricia’s Musings that is a must see!
