This is a photo of Chive buds and new Chive flowers that I took about two weeks ago. The chive flowers are actually beginning to wain now, but there’s still a few left.

I love growing Chives. They are one of the first plants to make an appearance each spring, often showing their green stems by the end of March. It’s not uncommon for us to be able to pick chives and use them in our cooking – salads, marinades, on top of foods – from mid April right through until the first snow fall in November or early December.

The flowers are just a lovely bonus! I love the buds before the flowers develop and bloom – they look a bit like garlic sections or tiny onion bulbs. Then the beautiful full petaled blossoms open and often stay around for two or three weeks.

Tulips on last legs

It’s funny, with the summer like heat we’ve had this week the tulips that were still blooming grew even more. Some of the tulip blooms are sitting on stems that are easily 2.5 feet in height! Those stems were only a foot to a foot and a half tall a week ago. They look kind of strange.

The tulip that I’ve shown you in the above picture is no more. Time and the heat took it out of the picture. Now it’s leaves are wilting and turning yellow.

A tip for those of you who are new to gardening. Once your tulips have finished blooming cut off the stems but don’t do anything that will damage the leaves. You want the green leaves to stay as long as possible because they are gathering nutrients and energy for the tulip bulb. You will have a strong healthy looking flower next year if you let the green tulip leaves wilt and die down naturally.

Yes, once the tulip leaves are more than 50% yellowed I do go around and cut them down, but I don’t do it any earlier than that as I love my strong and healthy tulips each spring.

I just love this photo! The cat looks so cute with it’s green frog cap on, doesn’t it?

I’m not really a huge fan of dressed up animals. Yes I do think some of the outfits are cute, and I most definitely think the looks on some of the animals faces once they are dressed up are absolutely hilarious. I think I could compromise with a pet in a hat thought. It doesn’t seem to be quite as abnormal as a whole outfit.
