An icy flower for an icy day

The weather outside is miserable right now.

It’s cold and instead of snow there are ice pellets coming down! I think everything will have a coat of ice on it when I get up in the morning. Brrrr.

As I thought about what kind of post I’d do for Green Thumb Sunday the weather outside (the weather that I got to experience first hand while taking our dog out for her last outing of the night) I remembered how pretty my flowers look just after a rain. Then I remembered this lovely picture of an Iceberg rose … now doesn’t the name of the rose kind of fit the weather we’re having too? LOL

Iceberg Rose

So I present to you and Iceberg rose on an ice pellet day. Hey, it works for me …

I’ll add this cool purple Alium as well. It’s supposed to be a spring bloomer, but mine tend to bloom in late June or early July. The iceberg roses will bloom long before the Alium next year.

Alium

Are any of you lucky enough to be enjoying flowers due to living in a warmer climate than I? If so, I envy you. I already miss my garden.

Actually .. I do have a few flowers blooming indoors. My Thanksgiving cactus has almost finished it’s blooms and my Christmas Cactus has a few early blooms. Plus … I have a small hibiscus in my kitchen and it’s producing lovely coral flowers for us. So I guess I’m not as deprived as I thought I was.

Thunder and lightening in February

by Tricia

We’ve been having some pretty wild weather here in Toronto since yesterday evening. This is part of the storm that caused major tornadoes in the US.

It started out with hail and or icy snow pellets at about 9 pm or so Tuesday evening and then I think it turned to snow. It snowed through the night and so far all day today! I think we’re supposed to have a total of 15 inches of snow/ice by the time the storm is over.

Now and ice storm is bad enough but this one’s been accompanied by lightening and thunder! I think we’ve had lightening and thunder since about 5 pm today.

That’s so weird. A thunder storm with snow in February. Very strange indeed.

My garden is immersed in snow and ice. It’s actually quite nice to look at. The clothes line is coated in a thick layer of ice too.

It’s supposed to be very cold all week and we’re expecting more snow over night and then again on Friday and I think throughout the weekend so this round of snow will be here for a while. Often when it snows it only stays on the ground for a few days at most and then melts away again. Not this time!

I love this weather

by Tricia

The weather’s been so nice hear in Toronto lately that it’s almost felt like spring!

My husband and I just got back in from taking our Labrador Retriever puppy out for a walk around the neighborhood. Now it’s only 1 Celsius out, just about freezing – but there’s no wind at all and it felt much warmer to me than it really was. We had quite and enjoyable walk!

Earlier today my husband went outside and raked up all the leaves that have blown into our back garden and front yard. The garden beds now have an extra inch or so of leaves covering them to give them a bit of winter protection when it turns cold again. Surely it will be cold again soon! I think we’re expecting snow tomorrow in fact. Although the weather is supposed to be around freezing or just above all week so more than likely any snow that falls will melt rather quickly.

And here I thought we were going to have a brutal winter! Perhaps I shouldn’t speak too soon.

How is winter in your area? Is your garden buried under snow or are you having spring like conditions?
