Spring is my favorite season

I absolutely cannot believe how much the garden has grown! We’ve pretty much had rain, and thunder storms for the past 24+ hours here in Toronto and the plants are just loving it!

I’d swear that last Friday or so when I checked the garden the Hosta’s were up, but only showing a few inches of pointy swirled growth. Now the leaves have grown and unfurled and the plants look full and lush! The Hosta’s are each at least a foot and a half in diameter and as the leaves grow more of course they’ll spread out.

It just amazes me how fast the plants can grow. The German Iris’ look like they are developing buds and two of my clematis have tons of flower bud and might even have flowered today. I didn’t peek at them today so I can’t say for sure but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are clematis blooms out there.

I think that because of the amazing growth of plants and the fact that we go from snow cover, to dull dead plants to vibrant green with blooms in the such a small space of time is why Spring is my favorite season. There’s just so much going on. Close your eyes and your bound to miss something!






The garden grew overnight!

Yesterday I told you about how lightening puts free nitrogen in the air and that often after a good storm that includes lightening you’ll notice that your plants have grown.

Well, the storm that I was referring to occurred about about 4 a.m. on Thursday the 10th of May, and here it is the 11th of May and when I look out at my garden everything is a mass of green and or blooms.

I wish I had a before and after picture to show you of my messy garden. You see, I haven’t finished trimming, pruning and pulling out all the dead tangle of old plants that died off last fall so there’s lots of graying dead plant stems and leaves throughout half the garden. Up until today that was clearly visible in many areas of the garden but when I look outside today the lush green vegetation of the super charged plants are hiding a good portion of it.

I went out and took a photo at about 2 pm this afternoon .. you can see in the left flower bed that I still have a lot of work to do to make it look really nice … but the plants sure have grown in just one day.

Lightening, free nitrogen and plant growth

All day yesterday I was expecting rain. The weather station said it was going to rain in the evening but it never did. You know when it finally did rain? 4 in the morning!

What a storm! Thunder, Lightning and torrents of rain … we need it. Our garden was pretty dry and I hadn’t watered for a week or so because we’d been expecting rain that never materialized.

Personally I don’t really like thunder and lightening storms. I don’t like the crash of thunder, nor the flash of lightening, but for my gardens sake, every time I hear that we are supposed to get rain I always hope for a few flashes of lightening in the area.

Why?

Well, lightening puts free nitrogen into the air. Have you ever wondered why your garden always looks so much better have a thunder shower than just a simple rain or even watering with the garden hose? It’s all those free nitrogen molecules in the air. our gardens get a heavy dose of the food that they need to green up and grow – that’s why the plants always look so much better the day after a storm and often seem to grow a few inches right afterwards too.

Humor me … the next time you’re expecting a storm in your area take a good look at your garden or your neighbors garden if you don’t have one of your own. Take note of how the plants are looking and perhaps even how tall they are. The day after the storm, and perhaps even the day after that take a look at the garden again and see if the plants don’t look healthier, stronger and perhaps even bigger.
