Last flush of clematis flowers

Clematis Jackmani

When I was in the garden the other day I noticed that my Clematis Jackmani was in it’s third bloom of the season. I suspect this will be the last as the nights have gotten fairly cold lately.

As I sit here typing this post at close to 2 a.m. it’s dropped down to 5 Celsius (41 F) – so yes it’s quite cold for this time of year. We should still have fairly nice weather for the next two months or so, but the nights will be cool, although I hope not this cool for a while yet! If the temperatures keep dropping like this I’ll have to turn the furnace on!

Are any of your flowers in their last flush?

Yo Yo Weather

by Tricia

I’ve found the weather to be very strange this week.

It was really hot hear last weekend, but we had a good rain storm on the Sunday and it cooled things down making the beginning of the week fairly pleasant. In fact, with the rain we had on Sunday and the cooler days on Monday and Tuesday we didn’t even think about watering the garden until Wednesday night.

Wednesday and Thursday were fairly hot, but then today – Friday we were back to reasonable mid to late summer temperatures.

However earlier this evening the wind really started to pick up. I mean it’s really windy outside. Windy enough that my husband was eying our neighbors huge Maple and he was hoping that the wind didn’t get any stronger because he really thought some of the tree branches might start coming down.

So you can imagine with all that wind it’s cooled down quite a bit. I expect it will get quite cool through the night.

If the weather we’ve experienced in the past week were a diet it would be a yo yo diet.

It looks like Saturday and Sunday will have temps in the mid 70’s. My husband and I are again hoping to get some gardening work done over the weekend and I’m actually quite happy that it won’t be too hot. I can’t work up the desire or energy to do major garden work when it’s 100 degrees and humid outside.

How’s the weather been in your area?

Garden puttering …

by Tricia

I can’t believe how nice the weather has become. It’s been quite warm here in Toronto this week. Well the last few days were. Todays a little cooler at only 9 Celsius, but it did reach 19 c (66.2 F) yesterday I believe.

I didn’t get outside to do anything with the garden yet, but Chris spent some time outside on Monday. Raking the grass and picking up debris that had littered the lawn and garden beds over the winter. It’s amazing how many little scraps of paper etc get stuck in plants and on the lawn over the winter months when you live on a busy and windy street.

I think I keep waiting to feel better to get outside, but I think if I actually went outside and started puttering around in the garden the act of being out there doing stuff would make me feel better.

Maybe I will go out there and putter around for a bit. I’ll bring my pruners out. I don’t think I’ll prune the roses yet, but certainly I can begin to cut down and remove some stems from the dead top growth of the perennials.

Have any of you started to work on your garden now that Spring has arrived? If you have, what plants are beginning to grow?
