Such a fluffy rose

by Tricia

Sharifa Asma English Rose

Sharifa Asma – a lovely English rose.

Just looking at this photo brings the scent of this rose to mind. It has one of the most beautiful rose scents that I’ve ever smelled.

My Sharifa Asma is about five years old and grows to approximately 3 to 4 feet in height each year. It’s fairly hardy, probably a zone four with some protection.

It’s flowers are multi-petaled as shown above. They are what I call “fluffy” roses. They have more of an old rose look when the flower bud is first opening but as the flower matures the petals let loose and you get a full and fluffy look like I’ve pictured above.

Do you grow English Roses? Which ones are your favorites?

Balloons in the garden

Balloon Flower Purple

The Balloon flower is a pretty flower once it becomes established in your garden.

I have three of this bluish purple kind, as well as two white balloon flower plants and one pink balloon flower plant. Yes, I love balloon flowers. Can you tell?

In the lower right corner I think that you can see a bud forming. The petals are folded in and as the bud grows it looks like a hollow ball or a balloon. When it finally opens the flower appears as above.

Unfortunately the flower, once it’s bloomed, doesn’t last long – perhaps a day at most. The flower dies quickly and droops like a wet rag.

I’d just finished picking off a bunch of dead flowers before I took this photo. That’s why there’s so many flowerless stalks. When a dead bloom is plucked off it’s stalk a milky white substance drips from the damaged stalk to heal the wound.

Rose blooms galore!

by Tricia

Remember about two weeks ago I wrote a post about all the roses in my yard? I told you that they were all in bloom at once and that the scent was heavenly?

I was working bellow the roses in the middle photo planting some new plants when the roses were in full bloom and I ended up being covered in petals. The branches of one of my largest roses, William Baffin, were moving in the light breeze and petals were raining down on me.

I still have roses in bloom but different roses, different colors and different scents now. The lilies are blooming too.

I thought you might enjoy seeing the roses in bloom so here’s a sample from my garden for you to enjoy.

Fading William Baffin blooms:

That was a whole lot of pink wasn’t it? If only you could smell it too!
