My turtles have adopted me

by Tricia

Yesterday I was sitting at my desktop computer, minding my own business as I worked and I felt eyes staring at me. No it wasn’t my elderly neighbor peeking at me from her dining room window this time.

It was my box turtles!

They often watch me as I work on the computer. Well, Spaz, the male box turtle is absolutely in love with Myrtle the female box turtles so he mostly stares at Myrtle. Myrtle on the other hand stares at me.

I’m starting to wonder if they think I’m a turtle too? I mean when I’m working away on the computer I don’t move all that much more than they do. Yes, I get up and make myself a drink every now and then or take a washroom break, but when I’m working I’m often at the computer for hours.

It can’t be all that exciting to watch me work, but I guess I’m the only entertainment my turtles have most of the time.

The birds are back

by Tricia

We have birds that stick around year round but I don’t see them in large groups or all that often through the winter.

Yes, a few birds each day in the winter months is a normal sighting, but now that Spring is approaching and the snow has melted the birds are hanging out in our garden again.

I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing 10 or 20 birds sitting on my laundry line, or scattered throughout the yard perhaps hunting the garden beds and grass for signs of earthworms or other interesting food items.

Luckily I haven’t see too many squirrels yet. I imagine that they’ll be digging in my garden beds soon too. Either looking for nuts and other goodies that they buried in the past or hiding new goodies.

Have you noticed more wildlife in your garden now that the weather is getting better?

The hunter and the hunted

Wordless Wednesday

Our yard seems to be a haven for animals. We have all types of birds – including the dreaded pigeons, squirrels, the occasional raccoon, and then there’s the stray and or wandering cats that travel through our backyard pretty much every evening.

I didn’t take this photo, but I certainly could have. You see, we have a similar type of wooden birdhouse attached to the electric pole in the corner of our backyard. Well, the pole is actually in the very corner of our neighbors yard, but it’s our bird house on the pole.

I’ve seen squirrels site just the way this cat is sitting on the bird house. As if they were waiting and watching for something to happen down below. I’ve also see a cat, just once, perched just like this on our bird house. I’m certain the cat was waiting for a bird to either come out or visit the birdhouse.

Birds aren’t all that stupid though. I think it would have to be a pretty stunned one to visit a bird house with a big predator sitting on top of it!
